I don't like when there's too much going on, or if they look pixelated or something. dark red or brown is nice, subtle "light" coming through. the AVRI guards usually look pretty good. I like the tort on the classic player jag. but I've seen some pretty nasty tort on some of the Squier VM ...

I had a Squier vm jaguar that was about as heavy if not heavier than my fender CP jaguar with the alder/whatever body.

my jazzmaster is a little lighter than it's fender counterpart so it's probably one of those YMMV things.
