It's hard to tell from the photo, but I don't think it's a case of "missing truss rod nut" but a case of "broken truss rod." If you tighten the truss rod nut too much, it will shear off the threaded part of the truss rod--and you no longer have the thread where the truss rod nut ...

Interesting point on the pole piece/pickup covers. I never really thought about it but probably something like... "Leo tried to shave as much cost out of the Mustang/Duo-Sonic/MusicMaster. So he used less pole piece material and saved half a penny and didn't bother pressing out the pole piece h...

Is the rear pickup original? The pole pieces look a bit "proud" compared to the 60's pickup I'm used to seeing--which are completely flush. I ask since I've never seen a "naked" 70's pickup... Here is a photo of a 65 pickup for comparison. http://fendermustangstory.com/gphotos/mu...

It doesn't look like any packing material was used inside the case to immobilize the guitar. Thus the guitar shifted around and broke through the case. The case is too long for the guitar which doesn't help either. A guitar needs to be packed to mimic a "form-fit case" with packing materia...
