the pickups might not be replacements, as they both appear to have flat polepieces. Still a bad deal though.

It's very easy. The most important step is to make sure you get really good painter's tape, so that you'll end up with a clean paint line.

I got the impression of 'running out of money' by you asking for the strat pickups and mentioning the price of the pickguard, but I guess I was wrong.

No offense, but it seems like you just keep starting new projects instead of finishing one first, and then running out of money for them.

imo, there's no reason not to turn this into a replica of his, as you'll never find a body more suited to it then this one.

those 70s ric copies are great. I have one; likely ibanez, but missing the truss rod cover so I don't know for sure. Set neck, and most details are there except for the double truss rods. Here's a pic with the rest of my collection:

Man that is a BEAUTIFUL collection. Love the look of that Ibanez bass and Hag II next to each other. thanks! The one thing that bugs me is the lack of logos on both of them. I'll be picking up a NOS decal for the hagstrom shortly, but finding a Ibanez ric truss rod cover would be a rather difficult...

I dont think there is anything wrong with this guy breaking his Mustang up. My gripe is with folk that run a business on the basis of dismantling perfectly good guitars. my 70s mustang project body has had the bridge holes filled with wood/wood filler and re-drilled so that the mustang bridge can't rock at all. I'm guessing this was done in the 70s by the original
owner, so obviously this idea's been around a long time.
