Fixing a bass tuner
I stumbled into a few basses over the years. My Mustang bass has a loose tulip on the tuner. The tulip slides back in to the tuner, but doesn't stay tight, and causes a buzz/rattle. Can the calipers be pinched more tightly together to hold it, or should I try solder or Loctite? I'd hate to make a me...

Re: How often do you change your strings?
Change them into what? I chose Sloan because I almost never change strings. I have boxes of them, and many that have been strung, then removed to do more work, so are wrapped around a tailpiece poking out in every dangerous way. Some strings start to smell like pennies or garlic over time. No vampir...

Hell Labs project update
If anyone is wondering, I stopped posting a while back because I was putting all my spare time into building. Last year I put together a dozen or more guitars, including multiple Telecasters. I am going to blog about them, because they are cover just about every model except Snakehead. I made severa...

I have managed to unscrew the neck and brute force it to the side, which may be easier with shorter neck. You have to plow through the initial terror and good sense. I have also been able to do something similar with the bridge, by loosening the screws just slightly. There can be enough wiggle room ...

I like the idea of rethinking the Rick knobs. I have some white Mustang knobs that I really like. Replicas with believable black and brown color options could kick ass. I don't remember what you are using for plastic or resin, but it would be great to have a range of browns, blacks, and creams that ...

What he said. I use a Bosch Colt router. You could probably use a Dremel with a router bit. The main thing is to have the speed so it doesn't melt. Even if you could cut or saw it cleanly, nothing beats a router for the perfect edge. My router is really too small to make bodies with, but I have done...

It's not terribly innovative as a design, but I like the paint. I wonder how the painted frets feel. What if Fender got really crazy and swapped the necks? Ooh, wacky. I almost painted an entire guitar white like a ghost but chickened out. Well—it was a vintage XII. The pointy rectangle pickup hol...
