The lazy designers.. the samurai was made in photoshop by a bored executive splicing together the top of a Fender Performer and the arse of a Katana.. it's really quite ugly.

I don't know about the clear coat, but we always used to use Mod Podge in art class to do that sort of decoupage stuff. I'd bet it would work great for your idea and also create a protective layer between the clear coat and paper.

It's possible that your soldering iron just isn't able to apply enough heat. A lot is required when soldering things to metallic surfaces like pots or bridge plates or w.e.
