I'm in Japan right now and want one of these SO BAD. But they don't go on sale until next month... and I leave Saturday.
The listed price is retail. They'll sell for less. Some people at TalkBass have already pre-ordered through Ishibashi (one of the Japanese "guitar center" type stores) and paid approximately 120-130k yen, which is about $1600.
I want one goddamnit!!!

That sounds more feasible.
Aye indeed, my purchase of the ST68 had the benefit of getting even the tax off for a total of Y73,000 in 2008 (thanks to the producer friend of mine who was with me). But unfortunately after $100 shipping and the stupid local VAT, I'd be paying a bit over $2000 for this charming reissue.

While I would love to get one of these, I think they're too expensive... especially since they're using basic Japanese Jaguar pickups, which would likely need to be replaced.
The current Schecter Hellcat VI with Duncan SJAGs is better value, I think.

I just got this email from Ishibashi. I'm still gonna wait a bit, see how the reviews end up. This is a lot of money to pay without actually trying it out first. Friggin Japan... if only I could stay one more week!

To be honest, I can't believe this is going to be any better - and probably will be not as good - as the new, revised Schecter Hellcat VI with the genuine Duncan SJAG-1 pups. I just got one and it is fantastic!
Let's see..2012 Hellcat VI delivered = US$600 MIJ 2012 Fender Bass VI = approx US$2,000 after shipping and duty.
So, anyone feel the Fender will be roughly 3 times as good as the Schecter?
Also, the Fender VI's bridge pickup is so close to the bridge that it produces a thin, scracky sound which doesn't solo well in the bass role ('sounds too thin for that Jaco tone).
The new HCVI's bridge p/u is a little further away from the bridge which should produce a fuller & more lower-midrange-gutsy bridge pickup tone compared to the Fender.
The Fender's neck pickup produces a mellow, sonorous tone which IMO lacks a bit of the lower midrange punch which the Hellcat VI's more centered neck p/u placement should provide.
Then there's the HCVI hard tail tuning stability which counts large in the real world of gigging air conditioned bars where patron body heat buildup can raise room temperatures substancially thus destablizing trem-equipped instruments to a greater degree over the course of a set.
Anyway, guess the jury will be out on this one till someone does an A/B with both of these new entries.
