Got another Squier Cyclone. Made a couple of tweaks

Post by bubbastain »

Well I liked the first Squier Cyclone I bought when they recently came out again so I just bought another. There was a little bit of a difference with the second one as far as details go. First off the wiring was wrong. It would make noise even with the volume pot all the way down. Turns out they got the wires on the jack wired backwards. Fixed that. I also noticed indents from the pick guard and jack plate in the clear finish as if they were assembled before the clear was 100% cured. There is also what looks like a "oops" moment at the bottom of the neck pocket. Covered up by the pickguard so no big deal. I don't really care too much about this stuff so it's cool. I did some pickup swapping and recorded some clips too. It currently has a Suhr Aldrich (chrome) in the bridge and a TexMex neck pickup from a Tele. One 500k EVH low friction pot and a switchcraft jack. I plan on having the frets finished off a little better sometime soon too. Some new tuners, probably locking units are in it's future too. Anyways, here is the guitar...

Here is a clip of a few pickups. 3 of them were recored with the Squier Cyclone and one with the Fender Cyclone. Fender Cyclone had the stock Atomic Humbucker and the Squier had the stock humbucker, a Suhr Alrich and a EMG81(not in that order). Which one you like best? All clips are with fresh 10-52 strings, one SM57 mic and one track completely raw.

Here is another clip using two of the above tracks(hard left and hard Right), drum track and bass(faux bass). Tracks are still raw with no eq, filters or much know how. :)

Amp gain was on 3. Bass, middle, treble and depth were at noon and presence was at 9 o'clock. Celestion V30 speaker. Amp was loud. Loud enough to be heard over a loud drummer.

We're talking about the recent Squier Cyclone and not the Squier Cyclone that came out with the Fender Cyclone right? Well my Fender Cyclone feels like a pair of well broken in jeans. The Fender just feels smoother and worn in a bit. The finish work on the Fender neck was probably better than the new Squier to begin with and it seems like maybe it even improved with age. I like the finish on the Fender neck better than the satin finish on the Squier. A little fret work on the edges and the thicker tinted finish and they would be the same to me. I am happy with both. My Super Sonic is my favorite though.

Yeah, I like the chrome. You can probably see from the picture that the Tele single coil is a bit smaller than the hole. I didn't realize there was a difference in size until I got it. It's fine though. There is just a little gap all around it. It sounds really good too.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a new black Cyclone. I've got a complete Fernandes sustainer system, JB... all I'd need is a Mustang tremolo, roller bridge, tuners & black pickguard material........ I'm very tempted, gotta test one out at GC soon

I have 3 Guitar Centers in the area and I have not seen one in the store yet. I bought one from GC online and the other from Musicians Friend.
