21 or 22 fret neck???

Post by Johno »

Alright guys, sorry for the newb question but I am about to buy a neck for my Jazzmaster project.... just a cheap strat neck, but does it matter whether its 21 or 22frets in a practical sense ... intonation etc. I know a Jazzmaster has 21 but this project is operation cheap as chips...

cheers

I prefer 22 fret necks since I do use that last fret, but the big difference for me is that with 22 frets, you have to detach the neck to swap a pickguard, and with 21 frets, you don't. Not a problem. Slacken strings, put a capo on the neck, unbolt.

They intonate identically. I had a 22 fret neck on my 25.5" scale Jagmaster.

Im in this dilemma to!..but im gonna go with 21 i think!...i dont like the 22 fret overhang...
But im worried that the 21 fret spacing will be larger than on the 22???

Fret spacing is identical as long as the scale length is the same. The reason for the overhang on a 22 fret neck is to fit on the extra fret, without affecting scale length or intonation.
