Looper Showdown (In Need of OPINIONS on Loopers)

Post by vierphoria »

I just landed a job, so I have to plan out future gear purchases!

I've been thinking about getting a looper for quite some time, but before deciding which, I need some input.

The alternatives so far is the RC-30 and the Jamman Stereo (perhaps even the Jamman Stereo Delay).

The feature most important to me is the ability to set a tempo. I believe you do that on both the RC-30 and the Jamman by tapping the tempo with one of the footswitches. But can you set the tempo by dialing the knobs? Furthermore -- the ability to play loops in reverse is pretty sweet and useful (useful-and-intersting-in-the-type-of-music-I-play), which would single out the RC-30.

So far -- I've come to the conclusion that Jamman>RC-30.

But then again, there's two different Jammans (I'm not thinking about the Solo one -- why would I?). The Delay one seems useful both in the aspect of letting me sync the delay with the loop, as well as in the aspect of letting me dial in some wicked tape delay parameters. It also features reverse delay (which I'm in love with) and the ability to make effect 100% wet.

But that's as far as I've come.

I know that the Jamman with delay is FUCKING ENORMOUS, but if I get it, I will probably get rid of both my Memory Boy and Memory Man Hazarai to make room for it. And since it pretty much does what those two do (am I right in this?), can I go wrong?

As always, I appreciate any input and hate, as long as I get some INFOZ. :)

i love my rc-20xl, but wish i could port samples directly from my pc into it. been thinking of upgrading to the rc-30.

keep in mind, reverse and reverse delay are two different things entirely. i'm sure you knew that, just figured it was worth saying if you didn't. the reverse on the rc-20 is pretty wicked, and i enjoy it particularly becuase you can reverse your original loop, then dub something over it, forward your original loop, and then the dub is backwards. gets my frusciante on. additionally, you can record the whole thing in reverse and trigger the forwarding with an ext footswitch, which is rad too.

all in all, this is the single greatest tool to my arsenal that has improved my playing with others ("jamming," as it were), and even allowed me expansion in my own songwriting.

Thanks for the reply!

Yep, reverse delay and reverse looping are sure enough very different things (but equally cool)! :)
