Okay, all right. THIS is what happened.

It was hovering at $1200, yet still under reserve. I have never been prepared to follow one like this out. But I had just sold a Gretsch and had enough to consider it. I have been longing for an old Jazzmaster for years, and had missed out on five of them in the past year. Just wasn't ready, too late, etc. I was hoping for a 63 because that's the year I was born. A bad refin is perfect, because it means it lost value, and I can also make whatever I want of it. In the last 32 seconds, it started ringing. I made a choice and it stuck. Even has a case.

The eternal question: White, Fiesta, CAR, or sunburst? I think we all know, deep down, that it needs to be a sunburst. But a solid color is easier to get right, and in my six years of painting, I have never been able to manage a good sunburst. Only this time I also have an airbrush. I have painted Fiestas before, mainly Broncos, and didn't hold onto them. This is one I plan on keeping. CAR would be nice, but I would have to tint it copper.

So to clarify, it's a refin already (and the headstock finish looks pretty amateur, as if I did it).

I still like it white.

With the tort I'd keep it white. It'd also be pretty easy to find pics of white/tort jazzmasters if you wanted to make a tint look somewhat 'period correct'.

Love everything about it, definite shame on the headstock though. Looks lovely!

totally, it looks great how it is. I expect he'll have no problem fixing up that headstock. if these squier jazzys ever come out, I'm getting the white+tort one. doog is also right, black and tort is cool, but the white looks nice how it is. I would just fix the headstock and leave it.

A google image search for 'Danocaster jazzmaster' might help you decide. That guy uses vintage tort guards quite a bit and has some nice images for vintage looking guitars. Here are a few images that came up near the start of the search.

If it ever arrives, I will start by trying to see what the paint looks like. There is a slim chance I could scrape the white off the headstock. If the body is decent, I may keep it as is.

This picture makes it look like it's been white fora long time. But look at the stucco texture toward the bottom. Maybe a wet sand could help.

I have had longing for a lot of guitars, but few have captivated me like this one.

I agree on the body, its a subtle aged white. Would be cool if it was in ok shape... looks great from the front, smooth light reflections around the edges.
That masking job on the headstock is terrible, he went right across the rosewood... the sooner that's sorted out the less janky the scuffed up body will look... it's an old Fender, after all.
Congrats on the guitar, must be cool to score a safe-to-refin '63 with restoration skills like yours... I would personally stick with a vintage white over attempting a DIY-burst though.

Teaser shot! I polished it up and it looks surprisingly good. Never underestimate Finesse It car polish. The string action can be measured in electrons with only a slight buzz on the A. Smooth trem, and holds the tune. Jesus mary and joseph. I may do my first demo on this thing. Getting a good silkscreen decal. They weren't buried under clear back then anyway.

The tape and wiring looks so untouched. I took it apart to make sure it was right, then got it the fuck back together. It's been raining all weekend, so I didn't get decent shots. I will wait for a sunny day. I wish it had redder tort, but please. Given the prices of vintage I feel lucky, punk. Everything looks pretty freaking clean. Except for double line Klusons, it looks like a museum piece. I see ghosting of what could be CAR under the white in the neck cavity and the trem hole.

This is the unplanned fleet. I also have a cream mandocaster that I am making mods to. I just bought a torty XII guard on OSG. The XII is pure Oly. The JM is a bit warmer. I still don't get the vast deltas between whites. Menthol?
