How do you protect the decal on an old Fender?

Talk about all other types of guitars. Jazzmasters and basses go here!

How do you protect the decal on an old Fender?

Post by westtexasred »

I noticed that part of the decal where it says Fender has started to lift up. How do you protect the decal?

Old ones were put on top of the finish. New ones have clear lacquer over the decal to protect it. Deft clear lacquer is nitro lacquer and sold at Lowes if you wanted to put clear over the decal.

Don't pick it. And HNB, not all decals are under lacquer - the AVRI series certainly isn't. The first thing I did when I got my Jazzmaster was to go "Oh, it almost looks as if the decal is above the finish" and scratched one of the little fart clouds with my fingernail. If promptly scratched off.

Maybe put a tiny misting of water on it and try and set it back down?

Thanks! I didn't even notice it till yesterday. I could see some cracks in "Fender" part that I thought they were in the finish but when I touched it I could feel part of the decal move. If the the guitar was all original I would leave it as is but since it is modified already I would rather preserve the decal than let it flake off.

Good to know. Only have ever seen it on the vintage necks, but I don't own an American Reissue so I didn't know those were not like the other newer Fenders. :)
