I remember seeing a forum not too long ago on another site where some guy said he inherited a lefty Red Comp Mustang from his grandfather and was wondering how much it was worth...I think this might have been it.

I remember reading that too when I was on the search for another vintage lefty. Did that person ever post pictures anywhere that we could compare it to?

There were pictures cause the guy was unsure of what he had, but I don't remember what it looked like other than being a lefty red comp Mustang. The inclusion of "Mustang" on the decal would be a good way of telling because it seems like most lefty Mustangs only say "Fender".

the pictures are kind of overexposed to make white finish look extra clean. but the whole guitar looks super minty. look at the chrome. it's spotless. there's virtually no wear on the saddles. the plastic parts show almost zero aging. IMO, it could very well be the original finish.

Hah. I came here to find some setup tips for this 1969 Lefty Mustang I just bought and I find it in this thread instead. Hello there.

It's in decent enough shape but was absolutely filthy. The amount of gunk (and I don't mean "vintage patina") on the thing was truely nasty. I spent about half my weekend cleaning it and doing a setup. Someone had painted the low E tuner red for some dumb reason which I was able to get off luckily. Switches were being flaky until I blasted them with contact cleaner. Tons of vertical checking everywhere. All in all though it's awesome.

I put a mastery bridge on it too. Very recommended aside from the cost.

Here's some crappy iPhone pix, I can get some better ones if anyone is interested.

I was one of the guys who drove up the cost, I probably would've bid a little bit more, but I'm closing on a house on Tuesday and I'm pretty sure my wife would've been super pissed had I spent anymore than I bid. I've got two homemade lefty Mustangs to go with my '67, but they're waiting to get painted. I'll post them up when they're finished.

great find man, and its cleaned up real nice - especially that tuner, i thought it might have been ink.

either way you did well, now that its clean you could flip it for even more, or keep it forever as a great example of a lefty. 2200 or whatever was a bargain basement price especially now how it looks

It did come out pretty nice. Don't get me wrong it's definitely not mint. The finish is completely checked and it has its share of dings. I don't think it was abused at all, it looked (and smelled frankly) like it was sitting in someones basement for 20 years. Some serious nastiness on the headstock. Naptha does a good job I must say.

The case still smells really musty, any ideas?

Definitely gonna keep it. I've been after a left handed competition Mustang in blue or red for a long time and I can only recall seeing one other red one once maybe 5 or so years ago on the bay.

One is 1/2 homemade (homemade body & pickguard w/ Squier Supersonic neck) and the other is an assembly. One of them I'm doing in Sherwood Green w/ Desert Sand racing stripes, the other is gonna be either Shoreline Gold or Burgandy Mist.
