Good examples of Mustangs in songs?

Post by plaidbeer »

Did a search on this and didn't pull up anything, so sorry if it's been discussed previously.

What would be some songs that would do a particularly good job of showcasing what Mustangs sound like? Aside from Nirvana, which I was never really a fan of.

i wouldn't say nirvana particularly illustrate what a mustang sounds like anyway, all cobain's guitars sound pretty much the same to me.

That and he used humbuckers pretty much in everything. They might have been in Mustangs, but they were not normal Mustang sound for sure. :)

A lot of Nirvana song alternate between twangy, clean single coil verse parts and heavily distorted humbucker chorus parts (or vice versa).

Even Fender's Cobain signature Mustang has both HB's and single coils. Same with the Kurtified Jags.

That early cribs sound is still one of my favorite mustang tones. Definitely agree with Nirvana not being the best example though. Apparently "Desperate Graves" by the Mars Volta uses a 64 Mustang for the clean sounds. I wouldn't say its totally characteristic but it is a good sound.

Real Estate's first album has a lot of clean mustang tone. I also hear a mustang on Stereolab's Peng.

Kurtz rarely ever used Mustangs on any album recordings. Nevermind was mostly recorded with MIJ Strats, and In Utero was recorded mostly with his Jag. Dont rely on his sound to give you an idea of what Mustangs sound like. He used so much bloody distortion anyway, he could have recorded a lot of songs with a shoebox & rubber band guitar if he had wanted to.
No.

Yeah, as far as Exile in Guyville goes, despite it actually being a Duo Sonic, it pretty much sounds exactly like a Mustang and I can't think of another album that has that sound slapped all over it, clean and front and center, beginning to end.

Liz was always a very fluid rhythm player and she worked that Duo Sonic very well.

Black Francis used a Mustang occasionally. He's using one in this performance of Bone Machine:
This is a good example of the Mustang sound, although Joey's guitar is louder.

I think Steve Turner from Mudhoney primarily plays Mustangs.

I don't think he does anymore but i'm pretty sure he did earlier on in Mudhoney. He was playing a semi acoustic when I saw them a few years ago.

Nirvana probably didn't record with mustangs... My guess is most bands probably don't. So it's hard to tell for sure.
