Guild Brian May Guitar.

Post by westtexasred »

I saw a Guild Brian May guitar for sale locally. The color is black gloss. The price they are asking is $1595. How much do these usually sell for? I did an Ebay search but I could only find one guitar that had sold for $2600.

No basis for comparison. I like the look of the pickups.

The 80s models made by Guild had Dimarzio pickups with black covers.

The models they made in 90's had pickups made by Seymour Duncan. They were copies of the original Burns Tri-Sonics.

According to the "Brian May Guitars" website :

"The Seymour Duncan pickups used in the 1993 Guild Brian May guitars were an goodcopy of the original Burns Tri-Sonics. Brian modified the original Burns pickups on the Red Special by re-winding them with reverse windings and also by potting them with epoxy resin to prevent them becoming microphonic. This means that Brian's pickups sound rather different to the original Burns design. The Seymour Duncan pickups were visually and tonally better copies of Brian's pickups than the DiMarzio's which were used in the 1984 Guild BHM1."

The one I saw is a 90's model like this one but with a black finish.

Zero fret should be mandatory on all guitars.

I've never liked them, so in my book thats a bunch of money that could be spent on something better.

I've always wondered, what actually is the benefit of having a zero fret?

The open string has the same sound as a fretted note with a zero fret.
Also, makes it kind of easier to perform a setup as you don't have to worry as much about string slots in the nut being too deep/shallow.

it means you don't get that shitty jangly thing happening with open strings, i think. i'm not keen on zero frets, but some people like them (obviously).

edit: beaten to it ^

I love the look, story, and idea behind Mays guitars, however, I'm wary of the necks, cause they're supposed to be uber wide. I've not actually played one though, so i'm talking out my ass. It sounds thus "THPPPPPPTT"

I don't think I'd enjoy a zero fret on a Strat or Les Paul or similar... the open strings on those guitars have too much liveliness I'd miss. On a Stang/Jag/Jazzmaster (traditional spec) I always figured it could be kinda cool, because the bridge gives those guitars a different kinda sound anyway (and I've played many zero fret guitars with similar bridge setups).
I'd like if all Floyd Rose guitars had them, their open string sound is hoopty.

Whoa, that thing is pretty sweatlogged (binding at forearm area) and checked (crazing below bridge) for a '95 Guild. They must've used some old-school nitro on these, even post-'91 Gibbos don't usually age that heavily anymore.
Either that or he left it in a fridge once by mistake.

I got an appraisal from George Gruhn. It's the first time I did this.I got the appraisal because I've had alot of people email me to ask if I want to sell it and I have no idea what it is really worth.
In addition to the appraisal George Gruhn sent me a note saying that if I was interested he would buy the guitar for 2/3 of the appraised value or sell it on consignment for a 20% fee.
