thoughts on it ?

coulndn't get my amp to rehearsal so used the drummers spare amp (marshall malmsteen on top of 412 marshall A1960).
he also has an orange rocker like me.

and really..the malmsteen sounded gnarly hard to dial in something near the orange rock oomph ..it'll always be my fav. on the dirty channel it just sound so..um..hard to say..'earthy' ..like you feel it in your gut more than hissing in your ears...

but i liked the malmsteen..made me play faster kinda thinking of zeke and stuff. i speeded up all the songs until my wrist started blocking again (had a bad fracture on it once).

I dont think yngwie even uses the distortion channel, or the noise gate.

The Malmsteen doesn't really have a distortion channel, just a footswitchable booster with vol/gain controls built into the back. It's essentially a Super Lead with FX loop, noise gate, booster, and digiverb built in. It also has the ability to go 50w, and it's built into the larger Marshall Major head case so the extra doo-dads fit nicely.

But yes Kim, essentially that sound is my go-to shit... both channels of a plexi jumpered so you can mix in treble/bass gain separately and then once it's perfect I spike the mid control on the EQ... cuts through the mix while retaining lots of oomph that sits with bass guitars nicely.

I never use one channel or the other, always jumpered. Alone they're too dark and too bright, especially on the Super Bass.

yeah i was alone when i set up at the space and was like 'wtf fuck is with these controls' ..compared to my idiot proof rocker 30.

but then once i played around with it the vol I and vol I blending is very cool...one for trebly one for bassy and get best of both worlds..

just why is the master volume at the back ? hahaha.

also i liked the sounds, but as my style has a lot of metal influence with damping and just chugging on barre chords like acid witch, electric wiz, early pentagram (blahblahblah) i missed the sound of that simple orange ..this marshall..wether it was also the combination with the cab (couldn't go more 'standard') it sounded a bit like lots of stuff you hear..which isn't bad, like typical speedrock metal ..i just wanted to play zeke or turbonegro lol, but felt the orange with the 410 ampeg just sounds different from the usual, so i prefer that. i would have loved to run that malmsteen through another cabinet. i'm kinda intrigued by it..maybe it has potential to sounds more distinct with a more distinct cabinet/speakers..don't know. if it would have been a jcm, jvm i would of puked a little in my mouth.

To be honest, your mate made a right hash of that.

Everyone knows if yiou set all the dials on a Marshall to 12 they sound like crap. He even made my beloved 6100 sound rubs, and teh clean channel on that SPARKLES along with the best Crunch sound I've heard from many a Marshall.

The Malmsteen sounded particularly horrible, honky and almost misbiased.

the orange rocker 30 never got much love either, hence it's discontinued by orange. but i love that thing. and slightly happy they're not made anymore.

the malmsteen is a totally different beast, and the fact it's a bit awkward with the master volume on the back, i kinda liked it. dialing in something good was a bit of a bitch, i tend to crank mids, but on this one i had the vol II (the muddy sound) and the volume I (bright sound) mixed, and the mids not even at noon. bass something like past noon, treble same. the muddy volume made up for the lack of mids since the mid knob just made it too screechy.

hmm..i liked it hahaha. if i see one secondhand i might go for it. (nah just kidding, i'm too narrow minded to ever buy a marshall).

reviewing that rehearsal though..it kinda kicked ass. my vocals sound like constipated hamster, the drummer sings too makes a good mixture.
hvm changed a lot went from noisy garage punk to acid witch sort of riff with some speedy parts like zeke. and the nasal vocals kind of make it sound more frustrated. i cursed so much. felt good. but i missed the earthy tone of my orange. covers more 'ground' instead of floating between the drums and vocals too much. (we don't have a bass player, well we do but he never shows)

Next time if you get an opportunityto play it again, try setting everything to 7, and then adjust to taste. I usually leave the bass a little lower like around 5 on my old JMP. Are you playing single coils or humbuckers? If HB's then don't link the channels, just play through channel I, otherwise it will sound too "muddy".

he had two channels linked anyway i left the link cable on. and plugged into one of the two remaining inputs. good tip on the settings, i'll try next time i can't get my own amp there. or even if, i'll try plugging it in to that ampeg 410 haha..could be the utter harshness..or plug my precision into it through the bass cab..could be interesting. we play without earplugs (the band i was going to join as second guitarist used custom made earplugs, didn't drink, didn't smoke..i didn't join)

i used the jag with double humbuckers yeah, i don't use anything else anymore these days. err.

For traditional plexi looks from the front. I did the same thing on my white head. The black '70s one has a push/pull master where the power lamp used to be.

I love my Marshall, it sounds awesome with whatever you stick in front of it.
Here's my '71 50 watter:
