Apogee MiC

Post by honeyiscool »

Love this thing. Sounds great on guitar cabinets.

No EQ, compression, or effects at all, just guitar and amp.

Sounds cool on girls, too.

I heard some Wire in there! Very nice.

MiC sounds good to my ears. Just got me an apogee jam so I could play through my iPhone on the go or late at night. Am equally pleased!

Well, I think "Mannequin" is one of the great songs ever written. Actually, I don't think that, I'm pretty sure it's a fact. Yeah, I've been eyeing the Jam as well. I don't need it, but it would be a bit of a luxury for me. I also considered this one:

Same price, but a few more features. However, I trust Apogee way more. That said, it'd be nice to have line out on the device itself. The computer compatibility is a bit of a moot point for me, since I already have an interface for my Mac.

Anyway, since people were complaining about Youtube's sound quality on another forum, I made a quick test of some mics w/ my acoustic guitar with 7 different mics:

http://soundcloud.com/mittensconfidenti ... st/s-mE6uH

0:00 iPhone 4 built-in Mic (Probably an Electret Condenser) - $199 + AT&T Plan (this sounds shitty. skip it.)
0:33 Apogee MiC Small Diaphragm Condenser - $199
1:08 MXL V67G Large Diaphragm Condenser - $99 + interface
1:40 Audix i5 Dynamic Instrument Microphone - $99 + interface
2:15 Audio Technica AE5400 Large Diaphragm Stage Vocal Condenser - $379 + interface
2:51 Apex 185 Small Diaphragm Condenser - $127 per pair + interface
3:28 Zoom Q3HD (2x Electret Condenser mixed to mono) - $299

You can download a WAV from that link. I think the Apogee MiC has a really interesting sound that works well for my strumming, it almost sounds like somewhere in between your average condenser and has a little bit of dynamic quality mixed in, which makes me think it'd work great in a mix with minimal processing.

Sounds nice and crisp on the Mustang/Peavey vid. I'd probably like using that on guitars. At the moment I go back and forth between some MXL LDCs and cheapo dynamic mics on my cabs.

I think Pink Flag is one of the best albums ever recorded!

MXL LDCs are the best thing that's happened to project studios all over the world.

Good demos. The MiC sounds good, know what you mean about the dynamics - nice tight, clear sound, possibly lacking a little low end?

I've got an Apogee Duet though I haven't used it yet as my headphone jack came apart in the socket and it had to go to the US to be repaired.
