They look really good. Nice, interesting compositions. I've never done portraits, but the one thing I've heard is it's all about the eyes. Keep the eyes in focus and it should be good. I hope you post a few of the wedding photos, i would be interested to see them. I will dig out a few photos I took at my Dad's 50th. Similar kind of thing, lots of people, terrible lighting. haha.
Thats good advice about the eyes! with some of those the focus is a bit off but I was fighting with the flash(and Emma who doesn't like getting her picture taken haha) to get that right mostly as I have never used flash before. those were all taken at night with just a ceiling light and the flash. yeah will post them if it goes well. would love to see what you did at your dads 50th.DanHeron wrote:They look really good. Here's a few from my Dads 50th. I'm not a fan of using flashes and started off not using a flash at all... but then when people were dancing I turned the flash on to stop motion blur etc. I only used the internal flash on my X100.. don't have any external flash equipment.
They're not amazing photos lol I just tried to get in between people, capture individuals/expressions and small groups. Rather than just a general shot of the whole room.

Thats some great captures Dan.
I am worried about light for this wedding as the weather is going to be bad and it is a late wedding. So I thought I had better have a flash and know how to use it. Thanks to the inlaws once again. I also got a slightly broken(can only use manual and program mode) Nikon d100 to use as back up.

So how about suggestions for a monthly or bi-weekly theme? I've taken an interest in street photography lately so I think something related to that would be fun. Or maybe pubs (inside or out)?
I too prefer natural lighting, but bounce flash is amazing...it really opens a whole new world of options. I carry a flash with me wherever I go, except in situations where it's not appropriate or would be too awkward. (Carrying a full frame DSLR with a zoom lens into a restaurant already looks odd enough.) I'm considering something like this for my XZ-1; then I can just carry it around instead of the 5D. BTW, I really wanted to get the Fuji X10 over the Olympus, but was turned off by the price.

I didn't know the XZ-1 had a hot shoe mount. You could maybe get a 3rd party optical viewfinder that attaches to the hotshoe. Just need to make sure it has the same focal length as the lens, or near enough for accurate framing.
I have looked at getting some kind of wireless flash before, but most of my photos I don't set up... so I don't know how often I would use it.

Yes will get on to that after this weekend.Dillon wrote:So how about suggestions for a monthly or bi-weekly theme? I've taken an interest in street photography lately so I think something related to that would be fun. Or maybe pubs (inside or out)?
I was thinking of picking a line out of a book at random or something to keep things interesting and open to interpritation.
Well that was stressful! I don't know where to start but lets just say not everyone likes getting their picture taken...even when it's their wedding!
also lens malfunctions and crap crap crap lighting didn't help either.
Just processed a couple pictures today to put up on facebook as a teaser.

Thanks guys
I was quite reserved with the shots as I was trying to think about each shot(made some stupid fucking mistakes though) took around 600 shots. I had a 4gb card in the camera and was shooting raw so that was pretty much the card spent. I had other cards but I was worried about corrupting the card if I took it out to put another in.

Yep we were Eeek! We did is a favor as the bride(an artist) decorated the cake for our wedding.DanHeron wrote:They look great! Especially like the mirror one.
Were you the 'official' photographers? That must've been quite a lot of pressure! Looks like you've done good though.. how many shots did you take?

Haha thanks!
Nice wedding shots, Hurb! I hope to do that some day.
I got myself some new toys

They're both in only decent shape cosmetically, but they both work great. The lens on the Minolta is in rough shape, though...and there are a bunch of specks through the viewfinder. I don't know if that's in the lens, or dust on the mirror or whatever. I hope it's nothing bad, because I'm told it's quite rare...apparently they didn't make very many of the SRT 202 in black. I'm planning on having a local camera shop look at them, and possibly service them...but I HAVE to try them out first
Can anyone recommend some good film for all-around use? Color and black and white. I'm told Fuji Velvia and Kodak High Definition are good choices.

At that age, the rubber gaskets have probably started to break down and leave little bits on the mirror and/or prism, plus potentialy gaps for light to leak in - we had this on our Nikon. We went to a free camera check session at our local chain (Jessops) and afterwards the guy running the session sent us some new gasket material that solved the problem.Dillon wrote:The lens on the Minolta is in rough shape, though...and there are a bunch of specks through the viewfinder. Probably specs on the mirror - run a film through it to see if it comes out on pictures (if it does its on the lens) and if it doesn't, and the light seals are ok, then leave it alone. Don't try and clean the mirror, they are extremely delicate.
Personally I'd run a cheap film through both first to check everything is ok then go from there.

^ Sound advice. I think I'll do that on my lunch break today. The lens on the Minolta is actually complete trash, though...after a few minutes of playing with it, it's locked up. Can't zoom or focus
The AE-1 has marks in the viewfinder too, but I know that's because there's some sort of smudge on the focusing screen. Not sure how hard it is to replace those, but if it doesn't show up on the film (not sure if it would?) then I'll just leave it alone.
At any rate, I only paid $75 for both, including a 70-210 that came with the Canon, so even with the busted lens on the Minolta I'd say it was a pretty good deal![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
