Decent price for a Yamaha SG200?

Post by Freddy V-C »

I have virtually zero money at the moment, but there's a beautiful Yamaha SG200 in my local guitar shop in Scarborough for £299. Is this a decent price? Do you think I could haggle?

If this guitar is still there next time I have disposable income I think I shall pull the trigger.

That sounds about right to me, but others have had better deals. Check eBay for completed listing prices to get an idea. Do you think you can get them down by 10-20%?

I'm not sure, I've only been in there a few times (I only discovered this shop a month or two ago) but they seem very friendly and come across as though they would haggle. When I asked how much it was they weren't even sure themselves, they had to look it up on the computer. Stupidly my friend Glen said "Oh wow, I thought it would be more than that", so the price could easily have gone up by the next time I'm in there! I just had a quick Google search and I found one on sale for £399, so £299 seems pretty good.

mine was £175. you'll get one for around the 200 mark on ebay if you wait for one to come up. just set up an alert, i reckon one'll crop up within a month.

What colour and origin Freddy? At £299 i'd assume black MIJ in very good condition. The white models are more common and the sunburst less desirable.
All aside, that price would be fair either way considering the quality but it is a buyers market at the moment and they usually go for around £200.

As I said, I can't afford right now anyway. I'd happily go the Ebay route but obviously that way the cost of postage has to be taken into account, and I do like to support local business.

Fran, it's white (I don't think I could buy any other colour, the white ones look amazing) and I assume MIJ but I'm not 100% sure, I didn't ask. How would I tell?

Some were made in Taiwan (stamped on the back of the headstock). But whilst they used all the same Japanese parts because they were assembled in Taiwan collectors pay less.
I've owned both and personally i dont think there is any difference.

You wont go wrong with one Freddy, they will give any modern Gibson SG a run for its money and win in most cases.

Like Fran said, in terms of quality of guitar £299 isn't bad at all, but they do typically go for around £200. I'd say that probably around £250 is an ok price to pay from a store as long as you're aware you'll be looking a closer to £200 should you decide to sell it.

i noticed another one cropped up on ebay, it's been listed before. looks like somebody's kicked it down a flight of stairs (lel @ control cavity) but might be a cheap fixer-upper.
