I bought this today(online) 1988 Rickenbacker 230 in like new condition. I am so excite!

The pickups and electronics are unique to this guitar. Here is some info about the Rickenbacker 200 series (Link)

Thanks! I think called this color was just called "Red" but this one has black trim and black hardware. It also has active electronics.Pickups plug into this circuit board.

Thanks for the posts. I found out that the pickups on this guitar are actually some kind of "hum cancelling" single coils.

according to John Hall:

"Most single coil pickups have a single polepiece in the middle of the coil, but these have the magnet at the middle (acting as one pole) and two more strip polepieces along the outer edges, completing the magnetic loop. That way there are two main sensor windows, lying along the edges of the pickup. Any hum will likely cross the entire coil, but each side of the coil is out of phase, causing it to be cancelled."

Apparently 1988 was the last year they put these pickups in the 200 Series guitars. In 1989 they were replaced with double coil mini humbucker.

Hall said

"We went with a more conventional humbucking deisgn, mainly because people also like to be able to hot-rod with coil-splitting and phase reversal tricks."

I haven't gotten it yet. Here is a video with the 230GF although,I think that has the double coil pickups.

The yeti behind the drum set is pretty rad. I like that he uses what seem to be kick drums from a jazz set as rack toms. haha
