Fender Cyclone - how much would you pay

Post by mkt3000 »

There's a Fender Cyclone listed locally a few towns over, and I'm curious.

It's a 2002 Yellow Cyclone, with some upgrades. Duncan Custom 5 on the bridge and a lil 59 on the neck, with splits on both via Push Pull pots; graphic nut, schaller locking tuners, wilkinson bridge, and HSC. The downside is that the bridge is black and the tuners are chrome. It appears to be immaculate otherwise.

Seller wants $650 OBO... I'd consider offering a lowball of $400.

My local dealer here in Ireland has got a last of the line brand new Cyclone. He's had it in the back store for a while and it's not really been handled yet. He's looking for €600, which is about $750 or £485. It's difficult to compare prices with elsewhere, but to give you an idea Mexican teles and strats go for about €500 new. I've got a deposit down on a squier mascis JM, but thinking of switching it to the cyclone. Probably regret it as the reviews on the squier are great, but not many good words said about the cyclone.

I own both, a squier jm jazzy and a fender cyclone. It's hard to say one plays better than the other. 8)
Both necks are beautiful and they sound both really good. With both pickups the cyclone can sound a bit like the jm bridgePU. The neckPU sounds more like a strat and the atomic humbucker is a real rocker. I think you should hold both in your hands and check which one is the better guitar for you.

I bought the cyclone used (in stock) a few years ago for €350, what was a decent price i think...

If you really want the Cyclone body shape and the 24.75 neck, go for a squier Cyclone. Not too different than the Fender version aside from pickups and those are already gone.

The yellow and orange seem to be the most rare, as far as what I see listed anyway, and usually demand a premium price based on this alone. The color, immaculate condition and the upgrades make the asking price sound reasonable. My worry with lowballing a seller is that you may injure his pride with such an indecent proposal and then he may refuse to do business with you. If you are buying on a whim and really don't care either way, then lowball him, but if you are seriously jonesing for this guitar, then ask yourself what you would reasonably expect to get out of it, if it was your guitar, then offer him $50.00 less.

It's the only Cyclone I would ever consider owning.
