Yeah, doesn't really work on a Les Paul. Is that baked maple on the fretboard? I think if the guitar industry is going ahead with they need to think about staining.

I'm not certain oils would darken baked maple because it's not very porous, but I have no way of knowing that for sure. Oils darken rosewood quite a bit, but obviously it's very porous and becoming more thoroughly saturated with the oils. Even your finger oils through regular playing will darken a rosewood fingerboard in about 6 months.
