Moldy Oranges

Post by Ben79 »

Anyone here using an old Orange amp? I'm interested but never heard one in the flesh. I know they tend to be brutally high powered.

Tried out a late seventies Overdrive 2x12 combo. Sounded pretty good and not overly loud or heavy. Hated my fuzz though, turned it into some kind of compressed buzz - never heard that happen before. It hasn't had a recap and the tubes are apparently cheap Chinese ones - wondering if it might spring into life with some work.

They're pretty brutal if you have the gain around 3 o' clock. Dial in a setting just before break up and they sound amazing.

It has to be said that they can be a bit fussy over what pedals you use with them. If you use OD then I'd have to say that you should try using the amps own. Trying to use the two together just doesn't seem to work. I've heard a few people say that fuzz pedals don't work well with them too. There's a very fine line between getting great results using your own pedals and it just sounding like compressed mush.

I'd suggest trying them out with your pedals and see if your sound suits them. They're not everyone's cup of tea but if you're a fan of overdrive, in my opinion they can't be beaten. I'm sure others will disagree with that but that's just my own experience with them. I have a Orange Rocker 30 and I fall in and out of love with it - It completely depends on the type of music I'm playing through it.

I must stress that if you're after an amp with sparkly cleans, you won't get it with an Orange amp.

Hope this helps!

Oranges are particularly bad with most dirt pedals, especially fuzz unfortunately. But then I never understood why anyone would want to use a dirt pedal rather than the glorious Orange amp drive!

Edit - what Simon said more eloquently.

distortion pedals with an Orange = Idiocracy....... its like putting balogna on a steak

The only thing I ever run into the front of my orange is a booster or a big muff..... The booster works awesome no matter what but with the fuzz it is a fine balancing act...... it has to be loud but right before the amp starts to overdrive on its own, it takes a while to dial in but once you have it ur golden

Cheers for the responses. I liked the overdriven sound but I couldn't have dropped £900 on it - possibly like I said, the valves and/or caps are to blame. The clean sound on it wasn't actually as bad as I was expecting. Not a sweet chiming clean like my bassman but not totally stiff either. Plus it had a valve powered reverb. Only had the built-in fuzz on my old Hofner to try its fuzzability, just interested in what my options might be.
