Jazzmaster, Mustang, Hum Pickguard on a Strat

Post by toez10 »

Well, I was bored, and too broke to buy a Jazzmaster, a Mustang, and an EVH Kramer, so I got to work with my pickup winder, and very lazzily took a dremel to a strat pickguard. Voila! It plays like butter, and covers a pretty broad tonal range. I'm thinking of redoing the wiring with the blender mod to be able to bring in the Jazzmaster neck pickup in combination with the Bridge pickup as well as the Middle pickup (or both), for an even broader range of sounds. So far though, I'm really loving the combinations... and the fact that it is a fairly atrocious looking instrument.

It might not look all that elegant, but from the POV of fellow players it screams versatility, which is probably more important, thinking about it. There's no shame in choosing functionality over aesthetics!

I bet the JM pickup in the neck sounds sexy as hell.

You make a very good point. Personally, I love the way it looks. I considered spending the time to build jigs for routing the pickups, and starting with a fresh, unrouted pickguard, but this way just seemed more fitting. The jazzmaster pickup sounds fantastic in the neck, and that's really the reason I started the whole project.
