You know what pisses me off? I love the P Bass. It's the best bass ever, alongside the Rickenbacker bass. And Fender make thousands of P-basses. In every flavour you can imagine.
So why the fuck does nobody play one? Without fail, every bassist I've ever tried to bring in to one of my bands has played one of those ugly organic pieces of shit, like a substandard Warwick that has been melted a bit at the edges.

I find that odd... I haven't encountered that many bassists at least in the style of music that I play or listen to that play those ugly warwick style basses. The most common ones I see are Fenders and Musicman basses. I play a p bass and a Rickenbacker and agree that they are the best bass designs ever. I think it kind of depends on what inspired you to start playing bass though. I was inspired by basically just subgenres of rock. But I do notice a lot of bassists that are inspired by other types of music, like whatever you'd call Vic Wooten's playing, funk, jazz, or jam bands that use those ugly warwick style basses. The same bassists that like those basses also have a tendency to prefer bass amps that are covered in that hideous "rat fur" material rather than tolex, and metal fencing material instead of grill cloth so that also speaks to their sense of taste.ekwatts wrote:You know what pisses me off? Haha. John in Master Charger threatened to kick a bass player out because he had one of those. Horrible ugly as fuck things that they are.ekwatts wrote:You know what pisses me off? I love the P Bass. When I started playing bass I wanted nothing to do with P basses 'cause it seemed like everyone had them. Then I realized everyone had them FOR A REASON and I can't not have one anymore.
As for the Foo Fighters, I love 'em. Don't really see the need for sig models though. Not at the prices they're probably going to go for.

are you joking? EVERYONE seems to have a p-bass (or at least a copy). Sound might be good but they look BORING AS FUCK.ekwatts wrote:You know what pisses me off? I love the P Bass. J-Bass is where it's at, especially our new (/old) bassist's metalicy blue one:

I too prefer J-basses, though lately I've had a hankering to put a split precision pickup in the neck position for the best of both worlds, would just need a new pickguard.

Signature models are just marketing. They're not even required to sell that many, they just make hype for a brand. The guitar itself is just a bonus artifact. And really, who is going to turn down Fender if they say "Hey, we'll make the guitar you want, so you don't have to use one that's cobbled together from various other instruments. and we will sell a guitar with your name on/associated with it!"
I've heard some "inside info" about a signature bass battle. The bassist (in a grammy winning band with multiple gold albums) I talked to uses a 32" scale Jazz Bass, already produced by Fender Japan. He'd been talking to fender about them making his signature bass. He said "that'd be it, right there!" All they'd have to do is import it. BUt they went with that little prick from My chemical Romance or something and his signature Squier mustang bass, because more kids listen to that band.

Mars Volta bass would've done better than Milky Way bass. Wider appeal and across a bigger demographic too, if you ask me. I think more guitarists/bassists look up to teh Volta because their music actually has that jam/textural/potsmoking quality to it, that's why I've heard about them far too much throughout my 20s and yet only MCR when they hire some crusty, misunderstood kid at work (ironically the dude I'm thinking of was a bass player though...)

I've been into Foo Fighters since i was in 9th grade and The Colour and the Shape came out. For some reason i've always had a huge hard on for that bass... bought my friends 1997 MIM CAR P-Bass and made it so. Got it for $100 bucks. It had been sitting in his parents attic the last 10 years. I don't play it much, but it's a solid bass and sounds great. I need that 5th string though for most of my band shit.

Yes, yoo too can own the instruments that make you sound like "the wasting light album" Foo Fighters are a shitter no talent version of the Eagles.
Its hard to reconcile that the man who wrote and recorded the supremely fantastic self titled album, then wrote and recorded everlong and did TINLTL which most of was good, is the same guy whose output since 2000 has been total shit. I mean Foo Fighters put out too many albums and songs nowadays.
Anyway, back to shiftys telecaster, his original was a Warmoth that he pieced together himself, and now Fender are duplicating the Warmoth
