japanese copy of a rick 4001. I dont know what brand it is. previous owner replaced all the hardware/electronics with rickenbacker stuff

Noice and congratto on the acquisition, Finster.

Old '70s Grecos and Aria Pro 4001/4003 copies show up here in Korea once every 6 months or so. Some of them are top notch lovelies, others will set you back only about $400. Would one of them prefer over a reissue by Indie, anyday.

No strings rings alarm bells. Check the neck carefully. Last one of these I bought couldn't be set up as one of the two truss rods was broken (how's that for copying Ric down to the last detail?). I would take a string with me to see what the neck relief looks like....unless it's so cheap that you can't go wrong even if it's not a player.

the seller was an OSG regular who had it playing and strung up before he sold it, he just pulled them off for shipping to compact it.

I will check it out to make sure though, my guess is that it will need a bit of a set up, as I know sweet fuck all about assembling a guitar properly (there really doesn't seem to be any way to shim the neck if needed).

My bass player plays a Lickenbacker from China. It's got this weird bridge pickup that looks like a grenade. He wanted to be Scott Pilgrim. Can't say I blame him.

Plays pretty good after I fixed up a few issues and rewired it. Real nice, thick chunk of mahogany.

Here's mine......It was just a badly abused body and neck nailed to the outside wall of a trading post when I traded some Strat parts for it. I scraped off several coats of bad paint and exposed the original mapleglo finish and checkerboard binding. I added Ric pickups and bridge, homemade pickguard and homebrew electronics, and it plays as well as the real Ric 4001 and the Univox 4001 copy I owned back in the 70's.

Yeah, I wish I'd had the foresight to take my camera with me to take a pic of it nailed to the wall (surrounded by horse bridles and tack, lol) but I hadn't really expected the guy to be willing to trade for a set of MIM ceramics mounted in a green pearl Strat guard. This is the photo I took right after it came home, complete with rusty seized tuners, old bridge with the mute portion crudely hacksawed off, and about five coats of paint. I think this was originally a copy of a single pickup Ric 4000 but for reasons I can't comprehend, someone hacked a neck pickup rout right at the end of the body and curving around the end of the neck, one of the reasons I mounted my new Ric neck pickup a little further back from the neck than usual after making a hardwood plug for the nasty hole, and made a pickguard that notches around the end of the neck. I also scratch my head wondering why, but there was an irregular area carved out of the body in front of the hacked off bridge, which I filled with bondo and covered with a black mask. Looking back, I'm surprised I had the guts to tackle something this badly abused but it was a fun project and I ended up with a great player at the end. And, of course, the funnest part is showing it afterward, lol.

The little Tele bass was my first attempt at modding, about five years ago. I bought a pair of damaged six string clones on eBay, and fixed and sold the Showmaster. The Tele wasn't much of a guitar but I'd been wanting another shortscale bass ever since I sold my vintage EB3. It's got 3 violin humbuckers, five way switch, TBX, Schaller bridge, Gotoh tuners. The short 25 1/2" scale is fun to play, and really fast to get around on.

those 70s ric copies are great. I have one; likely ibanez, but missing the truss rod cover so I don't know for sure. Set neck, and most details are there except for the double truss rods. Here's a pic with the rest of my collection:
