Fret Q

Post by h8mtv »

I just bought a Squier Mustang bass from MF with the known issue that "frets were coming up". The 11th and 12th fret are raised the slightest bit on the low side. Any advice on a good remedy? Seems like such a very small gap I could almost mask it off and fill with superglue. It plays nice and no buzz or fret out.

I'd be pretty cautious about tapping them with a hammer. That could deform the fret, surely. If you put a block of wood between the fret and the hammer, that would be best. Also, for some reason, the term "dead blow" comes to mind when I think about what hammer to use, but I don't really know why.
Best of luck! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I'd probably clamp the end that is opay and then gently use a rubber/plastic hammer (or hammer and a block of something firm) and lightly tap the other end. You can then obsserve how it responds. If it go in and stays there job done. If not I'd rig up a clamp over the whole fret. You'll need to use a bit of rubber maybe, to mold to the radius and apply a slightly more even pressure.

If after all this it pops up again just bite the bullet and drop some teensy amounts of super glue near the end of the fret and clamp it for a couple of days.

Disregard my statements. Dave seems like he has it more together than I.
