Thurstons Mustang???

Post by Awstin »

So I just got a 66 mustang body on ebay today really cheep. It's a bit butchered but I am sure I can fix it. It's just the routs and the finish but I kinda like how the finish is and might just leave it as it is and just fix the routs. He was selling it for $50.00 and had a best offer so I said what the hell I will offer $40.00 and damn... I won it haha. Pretty good steal I think. It reminds me a lot of Thurstons white mustang with the blue pickguard. Plus it's beat to hell, has a swimming pool rout and a rout on the bottom horn. Maybe it is his seeing at it was stolen in '99 lol. I think I might rebuild it like his or totally redo it and finish it in a sonic blue or something. Any suggestions?

I think it looks pretty sexy right now as it is haha.

What the listing said..

"Here is an original, NOT reissue, 1966 Fender Mustang body. I can't prove the year, but believe me, it's a '66. (Note: no rear tummy cut or front arm relief.) The wood is poplar- most Mustangs were poplar, not alder.

Yes, it's been seriously hacked, routed, and painted all kinds of ways, BUT:

-The original shape and neck pocket are completely intact.

-A standard Mustang trem and pickguard will fit the body as-is, and will cover all the routing.

-It's a vintage original, selling CHEAP.

With refinishing skills & elbow grease you could build a great vintage Mustang repro out of this."

You have your work cut out for you with that one. Needs some woodworking skillz to get ther one back on it's feet. Looks like a fun project. :D

Yeah.. I know a guy that could probably do it. If not I will have cooterfinger do it. I think I am really going to make it look just like Thurstons though so I would just need a custom guard and to fix the bridge rout. I say $40.00 was a steal for it though don't you?

I feel value is/can be very subjective. If you are happy, that is the big thing right? $40 is less than a blue ray movie in many cases. If you like it more, then there you go. :D

Could this possibly really be Thurston's mustang body? They say that body was originally a duo sonic with an added mustang trem and look how mutilated that trem rout is plus there are these weird metal balls at the bottom of it and that's not stock. Also look at the bridge spots where the thimbles would go. They aren't stock either. there's a huge swimming pool rout (big enough for three slanted strat pickups?) and theres a rout for a toggle below. I scaled it up to thurstons in photoshop and you could fit a five way switch in that rout sideways! O.O Mind blown!!

Probably not. Thurston's blade switch was angled. This one has it more perpendicular. Maybe it was a tribute or something?

Look at how wide that rout is. You can fit a five way in there angled.

Still think no. The wear on the bottom and upper edge is different too. Still cool though.

It's solid for $40. Just match scraps of wood with it. It's way easier than it looks.

It looks like a machine gun hole.

Looks great, especially for $40, whether it had a famous owner or not (better hope not, or he might want to reclaim it from you).

A lot of the Mustang bodies that come up are from '66 - I think I read somewhere that that was the year Fender made most Mustangs. I'm sure you already know how little value was placed on them pre-post-Nirvana, so a lot of them got mutilated in one way or another.

Anyway, that's going to look great built up as is. You can't beat real relicing.

It looks like a duo-sonic body routed amateurishly for a mustang trem, which is what that Thurston Moore guitar was. The trem was added.

Exactly! Lol. Look at the thimble spots. They aren't even big enough to be stock.

Surely the extra routing to square up by the neck pocket is to take a humbucker?

Well the spot in the lower horn is definitely wide enough to fit a five way switch in sideways.

It was obviously repainted too. But look at the wear showing through the new white paint on the left, it kinda looks similar to that on the Thurston. I can't tell but it looks like the middle screw in the bridge on Thurstons is missing which would explain my body because of the mutilated rout where the screw hole would be.

You could also make a Lee Renaldo Mustang.

If it was sunbursted. But I think I'm gonna make it like Thurstons. If it really is his body then it belongs like that, if not it would still be a really cool guitar.
