Soliciting opinions on distortion/OD pedals

Post by mastermorya »

Thinking about getting:

Proco Rat (2, because it's cheap?)
A red llama clone
Kowloon Walled Bunny
OD-3
Something else?

I'd like to stay at around $50. Obviously the KWB would be more than that, and who knows how long before ben gets around it.

I've got a Danelectro Fab-Tone but that's a too fizzy/scooped though kind of fun, if hella noisey. I also have an SD-1.

I usually play an AVRI Jazzmaster through a Traynor TSR-1 with a Marshall cab, or a DRRI, or an AC15, sometimes in stereo with a combination of those. Sometimes a CV tele, sometimes a partscaster, sometimes a 70's SG with old mellow humbuckers. And I use a space echo a lot, also sometimes a Bit Commander or Fender Blender. I just got a Supernatural reverb, I like to put distortion after reverb for ridiculousness. For what that's worth.

My best advice would be to go to a guitar shop and try out as many as you can.

Earth/Slint/Pavement (think "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence")

I want the Surrender Dorothy pedal from Aen but I need something by the end of September.

Didn't David Pajo use a Boss HM2?

There is a wide range of sounds in the bands you mention, not sure if there is one pedal that'll cover all bases. Not tried the Kowloon but the others are quite different, I really like my Red Llama clone with my jazzmaster.

I love my RAT 2. Pretty versatile I would say. Best £60 I've spent for sure

Boss OD3 is a great straight up overdrive pedal.

You could probably get some Slint type tonez from a Rat. From my experiences with the OD3 I think it might be a bit more difficult, you'd need something more aggressive/noisy - you could probably get something suitable for Pavement out of one though. A Rat may work for Pavement too, doesn't Malkmus use an OCD?

Buy used. Try and grab a USA made Rat with the LM308. Better resale value if you don't like it.

Malkmus used a Hotcake, RAT, Fuzz Factory and a Diamond J Drive.

Should cover all your needs and they're cheap secondhand.

Yeah, I love my MT-2 too. Very underrated pedal in my opinion. Just a bit too tweakable though. Once I get it where I want it, I won't move it for fear of losing the sound. It means I never get any other sounds out of it though

You just need to buy a few more to mess around with. They do to tend to go awful cheap. That's what happens when a manufacturer is dumb enough to put Metal instead of Blues in the name, I guess.

my breakdown of the Boss Metal pedals:
HM-2 = Marshall JMP
HM-3 = Marshall JCM-900
MT-2 = Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier sound

These are just the easiest sounds to get from the pedals with minimal dialing in, however you can coaxe other sounds out of them but thats the basic stock sounds they're aiming for.

The Marshall Guvnor II is one of my favourite affordable pedals and the Jackhammer which is close to a Boss MT-2.
