Using Amplitube for iPad Live (iRig Stomp & iKlip)

Post by taylornutt »

I am toying with the idea of using iPad and Amplitube for my amp at my local church gig. I am currently having to lug my guitar, pedalboard and amp up and down lots of stairs. The gig has a good sound board and the tech uses amp modelers for our main services, so I know it shouldn't be a big deal. They normally have to mic up my Vibro Champ anyway.

My setup would be: Guitar -> Pedalboard ->iPad and then out to the mixing board.

I was wondering if any of you have tried this in a live setting or practice and could give me some advice. I would definitely purchase the iKlip to hold the iPad during the gig.

Would I have to get the iRig Stomp? I currently just have cheap iRig that has the headphone jack and I am not sure how that would interface with the mixing board.

I know the iRig stomp is for making your iPad interface with your pedalboard but it kinda seems like the line out to the amp could just go to the mixer.

Thanks.

I've used my iRig/Amplitube on my iPhone in practice a few times, mostly to emulate some Bassman sounds and phasers and the like I don't have pedals for, through my solidstate bass amp.

It works well enough, but there can be some noise at times... but I find I get some noise whether going to headphones or to another amplifier, and it kind of depends on various environmental factors. Part of it, likely, was using a shitty 1/4" stereo extension cable to a 1/2" mono adapter into my amp, rather than a properly shielded cable. If you convert directly at the iRig to a proper cable, you might have better results. The iRig might be the way to go, but I'd try a couple cable set ups with the iRig before spending more.

The iRig Stomp might fix that problem since it has Left and right output jacks to amp or mixer.

I need to quit posting late at night so people can respond. Anyone else use Amplitube live?

I just picked up the iRig Stomp and iKlip. I have been testing with my Fender Bronco. I was getting a terrible buzz and I discovered the 1Spot was causing the buzz. I swapped it out for Boss 9V adapter. That seemed to stop the buzzing.

I need to work out some presets for live performances. The iKlip stand is really well made and the iRig stomp is a nice improvement over the standard iRig.

Could I run the signal from the iRig Stomp out to an external cab? Not sure if it would be strong enough signal wise.

I think you need powered speakers or an amp... but I could be wrong.
