'66 Mustang Revival (Mutilated Mustang Build) Paint is done!
Moderated By: mods
I may dissapoint a few with this and may gain a few on this. I found this awesome "color shifting" paint by Rustoleum. It changes in different lightings, from blue to purple to a little green. It's awesome. It reminds me of that purple burst mustang. So I bought primer/sealer (all in one), black paint (base coat), the color shifting paint (Shit was $15.00 in a regular rattle can ), and i got crystal clear primer. The paint is metallic as well. It is all enamel. Anyone wanna walk me through painting this? HNB I need your wisdom!! haha. Here's a few pics of it. It's almost a comp lake placid blue color.

Hoping it comes out similar looking to this What's cool about it is that it can be one color on an angle on a flat surface and the edges being round makes it change color. (at least that's what the can shows me) i'll have a purple and blue guitar. I'm going to go with a white pearl guard with a jb in the bridge and a single slanted in the neck but I am going to add a slanted strat switch in the bottom horn to pay respect to the thurston stang/build.

Some people just love to build. Or hot rod. It's the process for them more than the product, not that they don't care about performance.HNB wrote:I agree that you should make something the way you want it. I never normally end up too happy with my tribute guitars because they are not styled for me, but to look like someone elses guitar. Make a guitar for you, get famous, and inspire others to copy your guitar.
Cheers,
Doug

Ballsy choice!
Ballsy choice! That paint will look very cool. I've seen it and it really does shift colors...your point about the guitar being one color on it's flat surface and another at the edges is right. You seem wide open to suggestions so here's two:Punkacc9 wrote:I may dissapoint a few with this and may gain a few on this. I found this awesome "color shifting" paint by Rustoleum. 1. No stripe; stripes would really fight with the dynamics of your paint;
2. Matching headstock.
Cheers,
Doug
Make sure you seal the body and spray on some coats of primer. With metallic paint, the key is to go super light mist sprays,so the reflective flakes land and dry at different angles to catch light. If you spray it on too thick and wet, the flecks will lay flat on the surface making it look less sparkely. Also do pleanty of clear coats because the flakes will cause the surface to be less flat making it need more paint to flatten it out.
I'm not gonna do stripes and as for a matching headstock, yes if I can find a squier jaguar neck or something cheep for it. I think this paint will be killer. HNB, I bought primer with sealer in it so should that work? Also you have to sand the primer before apply the base coat and sand the base coat before applying the real paint right? What grit sandpaper should I use? Also you don't sand the metallic paint right? Only the clear coat? Do you wets and the primer and base coat? So many questions... Sorry.

What do you mean? That's what I'm gonna do whenever I find a cheap one. I don't have a neck yet for this.Doug wrote:Can you keep the neck, just tape off the neck and back of the headstock and spray the headstock?Punkacc9 wrote:I'm not gonna do stripes and as for a matching headstock, yes if I can find a squier jaguar neck or something cheep for it...

So if you didn't see cooterfingers thread of this mustang body called "mutilated mustang" This is the body I am using. It is coming out so well. So I think I will get it pro painted instead of rattle can. It will have a white pearloid guard with a humbukcer in bridge, single in neck, with a slanted strat switch in the bottom horn. Color suggestions PLEASE. Thinking maybe fiesta red. possibly lake placid blue?

Soo these are what I am thinking w/ a slanted strat switch not added for time sakes. Graffiti Yellow, Fiesta Red, Lake Placid Blue, Seafoam green.

Done with the paint! Pretty fucking beautiful.. This came from that mutilated body! God damn. Color and finish came out amazing. Done by a local body shop for $150.00 Like a Fender Factory Finish. Started piecing it together. Ran in to a small problem and need a few parts. Very pleased.

Piecing it together. The white pearl looks great with the Burgundy Mist. Loving the strat switch. It's different. It's actually a three way strat switch.
