Zoom G3

Post by Gabriel »

So when this came out there seemed to be quite a buzz, but it's been pretty quiet since. However recently with the release of firmware 2.0 the amount of effects available at once has doubled which has piqued my interest. I've recently been selling off all my pedals as I'm hoping to move to a stripped down set up involving only a g3 and an overdrive - maybe a bit of wah depending on the gig.

It definitely looks pretty nifty, although I think they coulda gone with another 'pedal space', given that the amp sim takes up one of 'em.

Still cool though, would be interested in trying one.

Well the new firmware is what caught my interest, I'll only need 3 slots but then I can set up amp models and spring reverb on the extra 3 spaces.

The G3x (same price) is replacing the G3. It has the 2.0 update (6 effects at once, more amp models) as well as a built-in expression pedal. Considering one myself.

The Ambient Shoegaze Swells - nice band name.
Looks like pretty good value for money; I think I paid about £95 for my GFX707 back in the day. The G3X is so much more powerful and £149 most places here, the G3 can be found for £129.

Kinda like the M9. I think the looper on the M9 puts it miles ahead though.

Looper on the G3 looks pretty ace too.

I got one a few months ago and immediately did the firmware update thingy, so it has all of those simultaneous effects ready to go. Like all Zoom products, you kinda have to dig in a bit to make sense of the features. As for me, after using the good ol' rectangular Tonelab desktop unit for so long, I found the G3 extremely confusing and hard to navigate. It's still a bit of a maze to poke through, but I'm making good use of it at the office.

What I like: delay, modulation, and reverbs are lovely. Modulated delay, hall reverb, and leslie/uni-vibe warbles are all good fun and presets sound very good, right out of the box. Pitch shift tracks very well, but is a little more "metallic" sounding than the Micro POG. Does the reverse reverb "blooming" thing nicely. Acoustic sim sounds cool, as long as you're not trying to sound like an acoustic guitar but rather messing about while stacking a chorusy reverb'd 80s thing.

Do not like: Drive patches overall are stuffy and weird. Many of you guys have heard our cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy and how the Jazzmaster roared like nothing else, which was courtesy of the Tonelab's UK/US and Dirt patches, simply having much more natural, crunchy preamp compression...None of the heavier gain settings in the G3 come close, so far. Also, so many people have been saying that the Two-Rock amp sim on the G3 is tops, but I can't seem to make it sound good unless it's blended well in a full mix, as in double tracked arrp/rhythm guitar lines. Of course, I'm pretty sure I don't have Teh Mayerz in the first place.

That is a promising review. I'm not fussed about the drive sounds as I'm near enough always running a clean tone, but when I'm not I can kick in my MadebyMike Blackstone mosfet overdrive which sounds ace.

Do you have any of the problems in regards to certain effects not working together or was that only on firmware 1.0?

I unfortunately got the thing rather late in the game, and hadn't read up on previous issues. My firmware update was the first thing I took care of after unpacking the little guy, so I'm not sure about things before, nor have I tried the G3 running 1.0. That being said, in my experience patches seem to work alright together when flipping around various effects while using all "6 at once", and it's easy to spend hours switching individual patches around on the fly. So far so good, in that regard.

Ace, sounds like it will suit me perfectly. I think I'll be ordering one some time during this week, just need to sort an acoustic pickup first.

I had high hopes for this pedal, and gladly it has met all of them. It is really versatile and sounds ace. I haven't tried any of the drive or amp models yet but I'll give them a go for a bit of fun at some point. The reverbs are really nice, I especially like the spring reverb. The delays too are also a treat. But my favourite feature is the looper, it's super easy to use and works really well.
