rail pickup with 5 wires in a mustang?

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

rail pickup with 5 wires in a mustang?

Post by sholkham »

Just wondering, I was looking at a cheap hot rail pickup to put in a mustang in the bridge posistion. I found one on Ebay, but I saw it had 5 wires for coil splitting and things.

Is it possible to put one in a mustang? And does it need to be wired to the switch differently (I don't really care about coil splitting) Or can I just use the live and ground wires and cut the rest off?

(also with a rails pickup would you suggest 500k pots? If I have a 65 RI pickup in the neck will it change the sound of that too much?)

Edit: this was the pickup, the description lists more about the wiring: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Artec-HOT-RAI ... 20c0cbb0d6

The 2 wires that are redundant are soldered together and electrical taped back onto the the main cable. That's usually what happens. Commonly... that'll be the red and white wires. Then Green and Bare together and black on it's own. This is what I did when I fitted an Artec pickup to my mustang.

Initially I went for the black and bare to one connection and it wasn't right.

Thanks, I think I have a better grip on how I'd have to wire it now.
