SHPD: Harley Benton California

Post by NickS »

We've been over this sort of thing before on here; it's an amp-emulating preamp, inspired by some other box (Tech21) that costs a stack more but has the option to cut out the speaker emulation, which is permanently "on" with these Joyo-made Harley Benton TrueTone series boxes. Mine was a bro-deal from Gabriel who was having a clear-out to buy a multi-FX.

As I wasn't going to be able to try it for a couple of days, I lent it to a friend, who told me it didn't "have enough bite" for his application. Last night I took it to the rehearsal rooms and used it with their Blackstar Series One 50W head. It transformed the experience. I took some twiddling to find the balance I wanted between the Level, Voice and Gain controls -Voice has significant impact on volume/distortion rather than being EQ, though I haven't had the time to establish whether it affects the EQ as well. It's replaced the Fuzz Face clone, which I use for controllable dirt (rather than all-out fuzz), on the pedalboard, giving me more flexibility and 3-band EQ while being a fair bit less noisy and giving me my bass back. We'll see how it goes with the Marshall JTM60 combo tomorrow night.

The Musikding forum has a thread with gut shots and noise reduction mod suggestions, such as:

Der IC "oben" unter dem Mid-Regler kann theorethisch bleiben oder für bessere SN-Ratio auf TL074 (15 nV anstatt 42nV bei TL064) geändert werden. Denn der Mid-Boost kann ca. 12dB ausmachen. Am besten wäre aber auch hier ein TLC2264.
(clean the PCB with an old toothbrush and IPA, swap the stock op-amps for TLC2264s) but I'll not worry about that for now.

Check out the manual on Tech21's site for the original and it'll tell you what the Voice does and how to set it for different Amp styles in the family.

I think this is the Mesa one.

I have the Fender (American Sound), Marshall (British Sound), and Vox (AC-Tone) pedals and they are all incredible. They work beautifully as a foundation clean sound in the style of the amp they're emulating and take other overdrive and dirt pedals hitting them really well. I sometimes just play this way, using a pedal into the American Sound and then into headphones via my audio interface.

They also work in front of an amp with some tweaking of the EQ since the Speaker Emulation is always on, but they truly excel as recording and practise tools. I think they sound better than amp sims like GuitarRig and Garageband.

I'm a huge Tech 21 fanboy, and the Oxford is my favorite dirt pedal of all time. That said, I have a Joyo British pedal and that thing is the nosiest, crappiest pedal I've ever seen. If it didn't cost so little, it'd upset me.

That said, Joyo makes plenty of great pedals. I love their Vintage Overdrive.

Odd. My Harley Benton British Sound is awesome, you must have got a dud. Get it exchanged.

I'll prove it in a demo.

I may well pick up one of those Vox or Marshall-stylee ones- that Behringer I got recently, while a super cool and useful standalone tool, suffers from the same issues as my Zoom's amp sims when using outboard distortion; undefined wooliness, no real bright highs or defined lows. It doesn't sound BAD, just doesn't quiet tick my boxes.

That or something Roland/Boss COSM-based to try and recreate my favoured tones. I MISS MY BR-8 SO MUCH :(
