Sonic Youth / Thurston mustang 3 pickup wiring?

Post by elklotzy »

So now that these squier 'stangs have come out, I've got it in my head (and wallet) to make me a ripoff of that infamous stolen sonic youth guitar... At least in electronic terms (no uhhh "relic'ing" involved here...)

Anyway I've been trying to find a wiring diagram for something akin to it and I've been googling the krap out of this for the past who-knows-how-long and I'm coming up with nada... Can anyone out there in shortscale land help? At least a diagram for wiring a mustang with 3 pups, at the very least?

Any help appreciated...

Oh yeah... And a pic of what I'm talkin bout... To refresh yr memory...

Um what exactly do you want to do with it? That guitar looks like it's connected to a standard 5-way Strat switch and the blade switches are no more, in which case it is no different from wiring a Strat.

That's what I thought originally, but it only has 2 knobs, unlike strat wiring... Not sure if that's a 5 way switch either, I mean I assume it is but I can't really see... The thought is that it may have been a duo sonic at one point, in which case there would have been a three way switch there? I dunno... I'm really quite new to this sort of thing...

Was thinking maybe looking at a cyclone ii's wiring might be helpful?

Look up the wiring for a Fender Bullet. They tended to have 3 single coils to a 5 way with one master vol and one master tone.

So look up how a 3-pickup Tele is wired. It's exactly the same idea.

And it's either a 3-way switch or a 5-way switch. And they're electrically identical, so it doesn't matter from a modder's perspective.

Yeah I guess. Thanks for all the help guys but I think this has generally convinced me not to do this mod tho cos it's essentially a strat in disguise, amirite? So I'm thinking maybe make a bastard cyclone ii out of the stang... With jag switches instead of the 5 way selector or mustang options. I've always liked the look of the cyclones but hated the racing stripes, hyped up prices, etc... I'll update if the project progresses in that way!

Just do whatever you would find the most useful. You'll be happier that way in the long run.

You could do a six way rotary instead of the ugger blade switch. And you won't knock it either.
