Any idea what's going on with this guitar?

Saw this on ebay. The seller called it a 1977 Musicmaster. The neck is, but the body is? A mustang reissue with the humbucker installed? It's not the kurt cobain version because on that one the bridge pickup isn't angled.

What do you guys think?

could be anything. although, slab body suggests 70s MM hacked up for trem/bucker/etc.

My 77 MM had a slab body so it could be genuine- routed for the extra bits. It was common for MM's to be modified/upgraded to make them more diverse. But the paint looks newish, maybe a refin or maybe a Stang body like you said.
Bidding ended, did you win it? $499 is a decent price.

Yeah I actually bought it a few days ago its in the mail now I just figured I would see what you guys thought. The neck at least seems to be a genuine 77 neck and I feel like the body might be a mustang. Either way I took the plunge because I figured 499 wasn't a bad price considering the parts alone. When I get the guitar ill take it apart and let you guys know what's actually going on in this baby. I just wanted to see what your opinions were; speculate a little, have a little fun.

Yeah I'm excited for it. My jazzmaster just got stolen so I had to turn around and get a new guitar ASAP because I don't have access to my other toys right now. The short scale will probably take a little getting

Man, that sucks about your Jazzmaster. I hope this one works out for you. It looks pretty sweet. And hey, if it turns out to be a good player, that's all that matters--everything else is just pretension.

Looks like a Mustang that was gouged to fit a humbucker with a custom pickguard and a Musicmaster neck . Nothing special..

I'd say easily worth $499. Body could be a '65 RI with new pickguard and neck pickup cover (has white switches). Then again it has American knobs so if they're attached to American pots that plate is either drilled or vintage, the edges would be chromed if it's '70s.

It could be an example of what many of us do, buy bits and stick them together.

I think angled humbuckers are cool but apparently they don't perform as well?

The Jaguarillo sounds awesome though.

American versions are on US Jazz Basses and AV Jags (and Dunlop MXRs) as they're made for solid-shaft imperial-spec pots with 1/8" diameter (such as CTS), but no US Stang RI so far so it's rare outside of vintage Stangs, which have split-shaft Alpha or other metric pots... you'd have to drill the plate, buy new pots AND buy the knobs (or just bork split-shaft Alphas gradually by tightening a set-screw onto them).
It's hardly ignorance to not know this, I take no pleasure in being able to visually spot the difference... in fact it's something of a curse.
