Re-tolexing an amp.

Post by ekwatts »

Yep, thought I'd be TOTES CRAY and retolex my head. Spent all morning tearing the tweed off it in shreds and now I'm left with this:

This is what it used to look like:

Re-tolexing it to match the cab. I already have a tweed amp... I'm also going to take the opportunity to replace the pilot light, too, because it's so dim it hardly works and it spins all over the place in the slot.

It reverse-matched the cab perfectly!

It was filthy and battered, though. The bottom feet were rusted and I had to drill the screws out to get them out, the handle was on its last legs, the front panel was basically unattached... etc. It really needed an overhaul. No doubt the actual amp itself could go on to outlive me if I look after it but DAMN the thing looked like shit up close. It's totes cosmetic, but I'm doing it anyway, arf.

Right, top and sides are on. I thought the angle back on the front sides would be a pain but they were fine. Corners are ALL OVER THE PLACE LOL but that shouldn't be a problem as they'll be under corner protectors. Just waiting for the glue to set on the bottom, then I'll do the cross bit at the front, drill for the corner pieces and I'm mostly done. I'm waiting for a handle and rubber feet in the post, too. Pics when all the tolex is on.

That looks like you've done a really good job there. I wish I was handier at DIY to even contemplate doing something like that.

Actually I'm fairly cack-handed at most everything. The trick is to plan it out METICULOUSLY and be prepared to make mistakes. With most things like this, mistakes can be corrected or covered up anyway.

So now I need to design a front plate. I also need to do one up for the control panel and change the pilot light. But, y'know, later.

Umm, not sure, I ordered a tin of "tolex glue" from Tube Town but everything was in German so I don't know what it was called.

Some of the rivets (rivets! WHY RIVETS) snapped off in the holes so two of the screws for the new corner protectors went in a little skewed. But it all tightened up fine.
