Amp+Cab question

Post by luciguci »

I want to get an extension cab for my Kustom Defender, and the Kustom 1x12 cab matches it perfectly, but the speaker in my amp is 8 ohms and the speaker in the cab is 16. How would I be able to use both? There are two speaker out jacks on the amp, one for the internal speaker, on for an extension, and a switch for 4-8-16 ohms, if that helps.

It's the 15 watt one?

I think I'm right in saying for a 16ohms and an 8ohms you should run the amp at 4ohms but that this is still mis-matched and will result in the speaker not quite working at their best.

Add an 16ohm resistor circuit in parallel with that speaker in the cab?

Explain what that does, and how to do it?

Basically, wire it like that, except, instead of a second driver, have resistors. Something like this might work?
16+16 (in parallel) = 8

This thread is discussing much the same idea - http://www.gearslutz.com/board/geekslut ... eaker.html

Or look for a cab with which you can match the impedance properly. Another 8ohms for example.

You find me an 8ohm 1x12 cab used for 50 bucks, and I will eat a headstock.

What 16 ohm speaker do you have? I have a spare 8 ohm Eminence GB128 that I'd like to turn into something more interesting if you've got a Celestion or something.

But really, just use your cab as a matching amp stand. It'll increase the perceived volume by bringing the amp off the floor.

I was going to buy a Kustom Defender 112 cab today, but I checked GC's site when I got home and it was already sold :x
Oh well, another one will pop up again eventually.

I sold an Epiphone Valve Jr. 1x12" cab locally for $20 the other day. All birch ply. Just didn't need it anymore. I probably would have thrown in one of my 8 ohm speakers for $30 on top of that.

Another 8 ohm cab, "daisy chained" run at 4ohms should work great. Check musicgoround.com and the used guitarcenter site to for some decent deals on affordable 1x12 cabinets. I've picked up 2 valve jr cabs for $50 a piece before with a little patience. Hope it works out for you! You might also keep an eye out for cheap combo amps, and just wire an output jack to the speaker if you find one that is 8ohms for a decent price. $50 isn't always an easy price to find a cabinet for, but people seem to sell older, cheap, combo amps (peavey, fender frontman25, etc...) for a pittance on craigslist from time-to-time.
