What do you think is fair $

Post by Brandon W »

A guy walked in my shop with some guitars he wanted to move. He wanted $800.00 for this. He said it was a 65 all original. I have no idea if it is.

Don't think the double string trees are original.

The pickup covers were super faded and almost yellow. I don't know if the pics came out right. I hate the "as far as i know it's all original" thing. I figured someone here would know. Does 800 bucks sound high?

I've no idea the price but as well as the pickup covers and the added string tree, the pickguard is also a replacement.

Comp Stangs started in 69 too, IIRC.

Seems like one of those things, where if you like the guitar and want to play it, 800 is actually pretty good. But, if you're going to sell it, it wont be a high profit margin type deal.

Um... it's clearly not a '65... unless it is and is obviously not "all original"; competition finishes were introduced in '69.

Now, it may be a '69 or so, but, things don't look to quite sit right, as others have mentioned.
You should disassemble it, check the pots, pickups, neck stamp, etc.

They both look like decent instruments, but, like Leisure said, they're unlikely to be profitable. For the store, they'd likely be a poor purchase; for a personal purchase, you might be able to talk him into better, though $800 isn't too bad, really.

When i say shop i mean a tire shop but people are always trying to swap. I wasn't very clear on that. It wouldn't be to resell. In order to do the trade i would need to justify it. It would have to be a too good to pass up thing or it wouldn't be worth it.

The tele had an old emg in the compartment in the case with pots and all kinds of stuff. He said he made them put it back to normal. He pointed at either the pickguard or the control plate and he said they did a great job on this because it isn't original. I wasn't sure what he was talking about. I guess something should look off to an expert but i am no expert! ha! I was only interested in the mustang.

Thank you.

I just thought I'd throw in my two cents about that Mustang. To me, it looks like a partsmaster Mustang - most likely a late 60's/early 70's body with a 70's neck. I think some of the late 70's necks had the double string trees. Plus it has the black "Fender" logo, not the gold logo, at least that's what it looks like from the photo. Also, the tuners look like the might not be original, but again, it's hard to tell from the photos. Anyway, just a few things I noticed. Hope that helps.

EDIT: If all the parts are Fender, then I'd say it's probably worth close to $800 even as a partsmaster.

I think my town is just a little bit too big to have a tire shop where every body comes in to horse trade.

I can't decide if that makes me sad or if it'd be a nightmare.

It can be a nightmare. If you knew any guys who played music or collected guitars with a shop of some sorts then a lot of them probably would trade. I've had so many crazy things come in. Several of my guitars and guns came this way. The guy that owns one of the smaller music stores is a friend and every time he needs something he brings in something cool to trade. The thing i do mostly is give most of my friends that are musicians a discount and they bring memorabilia and we put it on the walls. I trade the ones who have records out either a discount or i'll buy 10 copies of their album and then i'll give them to other customers as lagniappe. I do it especially this time of the year. I've bought albums from forum members also from other countries and then give them to some of my friends also. It helps them and my customers really appreciate getting a cd of a local musician with whatever they are buying. It's a win win. When i need studio time or a studio musician to sit in with me then they usually repay the favor that way. It all comes out in the wash.
