is that orange tone just very yellowed old lacquer or is it really a different color?

That's shell pink with a lot of yellowing. Mark Jenny of MJT could do that for you.

yeah I think he does great work, but I was pretty excited about doing my own finishing and saving money
do you have any idea how he does the aging/yellowing?

Tinted clearcoat I think - try doing a search for 'slamon pink' though, since that's effective what that is. Or Coral Pink.

Just get the Reranch yellowed clear. It works great. I used it on my Musicmaster to turn metallic forest green into metallic hunters green, worked great.

Check out reranch coral. I used it on a Super-Sonic.
A Whole Bunch of Guitars. Some with sparkles. Some with Pearl. Some with racing stripes.

Dave's Guitars has an original Tahitian Coral strat. Lovely to behold. They even commissioned new CS strats in that colour.

Would either use Coral or Shell + amber clearcoat. Coral will be a little darker than most yellowed Shell Pinks, but then the amber clearcoat might do that to reranch shell pink as well. Would definitely be one of those jobs worth experimenting with on similar scrap wood first.
