Dual Output, Three Humbucker, Black, Jaguar Project

Post by Awstin »

So I just picked up a Black Jaguar HH Special today for a steal of $300.00 I bought one of these new years ago then just decided I didn't need it and sold it. But I couldn't pass up this deal and I am thinking about turning it in to a standard Jaguar. It would be cool to have just a standard Jaguar for once and a black one with a matching headstock would be really cool. I have seen people mod this guitar a few times. But I really like it the best with a tremolo, mint guard, and aged jaguar pickups. The tremolo will cover the stoptail holes perfectly if I move it up a few and it will have a better break angle this way like the 50th anniversary Jag. I am thinking about routing for the trem myself. How hard could it be with the old stopbar holes there to line it up? Here is a stock picture of it. Then a picture of it with a trem and lastly the last two pictures are of someone else's (what I am going for). Does anyone know if I could just put a japanese standard jaguar guard on it or if I need to get a custom one made? Also do I need to put a few pieces of wood in the humbucker routs to mount the jag pickups?

Sounds like a cool project. A bigsby would be easier but I prefer Jag trems as well.

Doesn't the Johnny Marr Jaguar have the traditional trem placement?

Yeah. Before HNB posts it.. I'll beat him to it haha. He has/had one of these he put a bigsby on that screwed right in to the existing stop bar threads.

Didn't notice you asked about the Marr jag. I'm pretty sure it has the closer trem to bridge placement like the 50th anniversary one as well. Because I remember watching a video from Fender making a big deal about how it is better for string break angle like it is such a big break through upgrade lol.

EDIT: my bad. They are traditional. Just the 50th anniversary jags have it. But the classic player jags are pretty close to the bridge too.

You'd probably have to do a bit of routing to get the Jaguar pickups in there. They're a little wider.

Jag pickups screw to the wood don't they? Would anybody like to measure how deep a jag pickup rout is for me? It would be most appreciated (:

I don't like the trem that far up. If I were you, I'd just put dowels in the holes and paint the end of them black and then move the trem to the proper location; just not a fan of how it looks or where the trem are ends up.

Eh. It's gonna look nice. Probably even more functionable. Plus I have a spare jag trem laying around.

Do you still have yours HNB? And thanks for the link. I'll read it over. The mint guard looks fantastic with the black. Nothing else with the black really gets my attention unless I keep the humbuckers and get a gold anodized guard. What do you guys think about that?

So I can use a crafted in Japan guard? It would fit no problem?

Might have to connect the bridge holes for the TOM or your action is going to be pretty high. You would want the bridge area to look like the guard below so you could lower the TOM to the body to get lower action.

I don't know. I think it will be fine. My green jag is and mustangs sit on top of the trem plate. Let me get back to you on that lol. I didn't get a chance to look over the guitar in detail yet.

So I took the bushings out of the jag. I think I am gonna do this myself for once lol. The one bushing came out no problem. The other I had to drill out through the side because it wouldn't come out for whatever I did. I looked up every trick and then got impatient. It's gonna be routed there anyway lol. I traced my green jaguars vibrato mount and used that as a template. Then I cut that out and lined it up so the stop bar holes were covered and sharpied the rout and marked the mounting screw holes. Next step is gonna be to tape it up and start drilling holes, then rout.
