DS-1 (Time to Mod)

Post by HNB »

I decided that since I didn't really care for my newer stock DS-1, that I would give modding it a shot. My first pedal experience didn't go so well. I am hoping this might rebuild some confidence. I am doing the Keeley mod with the added switch that gives it a bit more bass. I ordered the new caps, resistors, and LED's. After I ordered the parts, I went to work taking the old stuff off.

After I disconnected the switch so I could take the board out, I figured I should mark using paint where the purple and black wire went so I don't mix them up by mistake.

Not sure when the new parts will be in. Excited to hear how it sounds when finished. The demo below is the mod I am doing.

Ah this is interesting. I keep meaning to grab one of these to experiment on. How new is this pedal? All the components are still through-hole! The transistors are for the buffers and switching system. What's the IC?

Why do people a/b pedals without equalizing the volume between pedals? Even gearmanndude makes this mistake. It's not so much a comparison of having the knobs in the same place, it's the tone at the same volume that needs to be compared!

Looking forward to seeing/hearing the results, hope it goes smoothly!

I really liked the DS1 I did the Keeley Mods to, it's a shame that I sold it.

The chip says:

M5223A1
333002

It is made in Taiwan. I think it is relatively new. I got it "used" on ebay awhile back by someone saying it was black label. He refunded me the difference in price when I got it because it is not a black label Japanese one.

I noticed that too that a lot of the demos didn't have the settings the same. I am hoping for a sound that is less fizzy and plain. (If that makes sense.) Hopefully all the changes do something. LOL Using LED's for one diode (if I have read up right) should do asymmetrical clipping that should make it sound more natural. Also changing caps and resistors to non-polar ones of a different type that is supposed to reduce noise. The switch runs the signal through the original second diode in to a red LED in series which gives a bunch more low end.

I had been trying to sell it for awhile and since nobody seemed to want it, I figured I would try modding it to see if I liked it better. :)

The black label Taiwan ones are the same circuit as the Japan ones. All you have to look out for if its missing the label is the AC input, it its the larger one that touches the bottom plate, it's a good one. I got my black label Taiwan version for $25 shipped off ebay awhile back so I could sell my MIJ silver screw version for mad cash.

It isn't a black lable one. The bottom is silver. :)

No that is still useful. :) If I came across a Taiwan one with a black lable on the bottom, it would be a keeper it sounds like. :)

A lot of the parts came in today. I am just missing my LEDs before I can get working on it. :)

I got most of the new caps and resistors on. I need the new LED's before I can do much more. Not much left to do honestly. It isn't too hard of a mod.

Keeley Ultra Mod completed! I really like it. Much more meat to the pedal. Less wussy. ;)

I drilled out my case for the Tone LED and the mode switch.

Worked on wiring the switch, Tone LED, and that last capacitor.

Added the capacitor on the back.

All done! Apart from the Check LED needing to be reversed to work, everything went in as planned.

Sound demo! ("Check" LED went out this morning. I will swap it out with a blue one when they arrive later this month.)

Fixed the LED. The solder had popped off. Got it better seated and soldered. Works fine again.

Did you buy the mod in a kit or did you find everything separately? This looks like a fun, and considering my ds1 barely gets used it would be neat putting life into it.

The DIY link I used had links to all the parts. Didn't use a kit. I think all those parts ended up being like six dollars or something cheap.

I liked the mod enough that I got a second DS-1. (From SKC) This time I only did the Seeing Eye Mod. (No case drilling, but the red LED is in there.) I did use a blue LED on this one. I tried both SEM and the Ultra and thought the Ultra was a bit too bassy/heavy so I just did the one mod. I figure if I am running two amps, I could have one DS-1 going to one amp and the other DS-1 feeding my other amp with different settings to create an interesting mix. At any rate, here are the mod pictures for this DS-1. Basically the same changes minus the switch and extra diode changes for the Ultra Mod.
