That area of the pickguard is missing too. The route in wood for a kahler wouldn't interfere with where a jaguar bridge needs to go (meaning it wouldn't have to be filled in) but the pickguard would have to be removed in that area for a kahler to be mounted flush in the right position. All that's left is covering the gap where the rear of the trem system went.
A Kahler route isn't as crazy as one might imagine, nothing compared to a Floyd or even a regular Strat trem.

I imagine this was a case of mistaken identity with the Kahler. A strat trem would be SERIOUS routing, all the way through and up the back for the springs and claw, etc...
