Yes! That's what I want. I love the look of a 4004 bass and I've always wanted it in a 6 string guitar form.

Also, I'm pretty sure that bass you didn't buy wasn't an Ibanez. The inlays are too small. The Ibanez 2388B had full size inlays, like so:

Well, the one in the photo you posted is the earlier version(pre 1975).The one I (didn't) buy is a 76(going by the serial number) like this one below.

because the strat and tele shapes are practically free domain (just not the headstock)

whereas rickenbacker has some intense legal crackdowns on copies of their guitars. they usually shut down ebay listings of ric copies before they end.

nope, just the headstocks. ever notice how strat and tele copies never have fender headstocks (at least not after the lawsuits)? that's how they get away with it.

Pretty sure there is a design patent for all of Fender's original guitar bodies. IIRC in the 70s there were some lawsuits against Ibanez (or its parent company which I forget the name of) that included the body shapes, not just the headstock. Another examples is the Gibson lawsuit against PRS for their Singlecut model. Anyway, Rickenbacker is a much smaller company, and I imagine that direct copies like that stand to do serious damage to their business if they're good enough, which the Ibanez copies tend to be.

Looked it up. The headstocks are distinctive and easily recognizable as being a Fender headstock, but the bodies can't be copyrighted because most people just see a Stratocaster or Telecaster body and think "that's an electric guitar" without even knowing what the company name is. They're distinctive in the way that gets them recognized by most people, even the non musical types, as a famous guitar used a lot. Rickenbacker guitars and basses are not as easily recognizable as classic shapes, so it's harder to create copies of them without their legal team fucking you.

Also, copies tend to change the design by even the smallest bit, such as deeper cutaways, pointier horns, slightly different pickguard shape, putting the jack plate at a different angle, etc.

my old teacher in st. louis told me some stuff like as long as there is a 15% change in the shape then its ok.
its a legal loophole, 15% can't be defined, but its still 15% different.

They are very nice!

Do you know if there have ever been copies of the Rickenbacker capri body shape? I would love one of them.
