Demo It Live

Post by ProcessedMeatMan »

Interesting concept. Demoing effects pedals through your own amp.

Kinda seems like a "no-brainer, why didn't anyone think of this before" sort of idea.

These guys sent me a free cable in the mail today to try it out. I haven't yet, but I might give a go this weekend.

Just a normal stereo 1/8 "to mono 1/4" cable, I assume. Pretty cheap though, I think they're 3 bucks on their website?

Yeah, pretty cheap cable. Nothing special. Cool to get one for free unexpectedly in the mail though. It'll get some use plugging my iPod into my car stereo, if nothing else!

This is a pretty brilliant idea and simple for them to do. I'm sure everyone will copy it now, as the recording process seems pretty straightforward.

I guess it is a good idea, but you've still got things that might not match up with your setup like guitar type, but maybe they've thought of that too!

Aye, though looks like they've considered it and in each clip have a mix of single and HBs to at least get some variables in there.

I would have thought a natural conclusion to this ethic would be some kind of of lifetime digital modelling of effects, plug your guitar into the phone or PC , out into amp, and play a modelled version of the pedal for say half hour. The modelling tech is pretty good these days but the upfront investment by the retailer would be a lot.

Before hcfx went to shit I thought it would be a cool idea for people to run an input and output into specific pedals, with an Internet interface that would allow users to try a pedal/series of pedals for recording or sampling without having to drop a lot of money on a set up. There were limitations of course (needing someone to be there to tweak pedals, for example), but then the website broke and everyone left, so the idea has just kind of been parked. I am glad to see proguitarshop try this, I really wish they would start a forum. I also thought there would be an interesting chance to capture usage data, how different pedals work with each other, etc.

If anyone likes the above idea, might be a cool extension of shortscale gear demos

Doesn't the (fairly) new Zoom MultiStomp do the same thing where you can try out a pedal from the shop for like 10 minutes? It loads the full features effect onto the MultiStomp for like 10 minutes or something and you can play with it before you buy it.

I'm probably mistaken. I do like finboy's idea though, sounds promising.

Unfortunately I don't have the computer smarts to make it work, would need a team for it to pan out, but I would love to get it working.

A cool idea, but wouldn't the difference in output impedance between a real pedal and an iPhone be fairly different, resulting in a fairly different sound?

It seemed to be explained in the video that the audio samples are supposed to be very similar to a guitar signal. They also said that for most smartphones, the volume should be about 75% to match an average guitar's signal. I dunno if that's what you mean exactly, but maybe it helps explain?

also maybe my words don't make sense because i'm coming down from my medication and i'm spacy
