had some technical issues at a gig on friday, which led to me realising that my duo-sonic isn't suitable as a backup guitar for this band, for a few reasons. so i needed a backup jaguar. so i done bought one.
initial thoughts- the bridge and tailpiece are guff, and i'll have to swap them out (need a trem lock). the control plate is a tiny bit squint, only really noticeable up close. the bridge pickup is a wee bit 'honky' sounding, although i haven't tried it through my gigging amp yet. the fretboard needs oiled.
plus points- the finish is nice, the neck feels good, it looks cool, sounds decent enough, and cost £255. for a backup / guitar i'm not afraid to throw at the floor in a massive rage, it'll be perfect with a few minor modifications.

nothing a general round of TLC wouldn't sort, i need to clean the switches (if you so much as look at them they start cutting out), general setup, that kind of thing... i'm considering drilling out the clay dots on the side of the neck and replacing them with something actually visible, at the moment they're the same colour as the wood, and are about as much use as a fart in a thunderstorm.
i must admit i'm kind of struggling with the A width neck at the moment, but that's probably because i haven't played it in ages. i'm so used to the jag, for some reason it just suits the 2-piece material better than the duo, which has slightly less bite.

i dunno, there was all sorts of weird shit going on, i still haven't traced the source of the problem. it may or may not have been my guitar, but at one point (during a song obviously) both my amps cut out, leaving me singing along a-capella to a fucking drum beat. if it had been a fault with an amp, or a supply cable, the other would still be working. it had to be the guitar, my main output cable (which was working, i'd checked earlier) or my splitter. when i plugged the spare guitar in, it worked. unfortunately, i broke a string on THAT on the 2nd last song, leaving me potentially fucked. i tried the jag again, and luckily it was working, but i was really angry, and ended up kicking it across the floor, which was stupid.

i'm just such a lazy bastard i haven't done any maintenance to it for 3 or 4 years apart from the odd string change, and it's starting to show.

to be fair those type of switches are a bit of a shit design (for guitar use) anyway. the tip ex may react with the nitro and melt the neck!
I will stop now...don't want to be the ex owner who thinks he still has ownership over what you do to it haha
(I have an Auntie who does that with OUR dog and it pisses me right off!)
i must say as well; i wouldn't normally bother about stuff going wrong at an ordinary gig, but this was a big one with one of my favourite bands, and i was spitting fucking feathers by the end. anyway, all turned out right in the end.
How does the Squier immediately compare with the 66? I imagine they are similar enough to make you feel uncomfortable thinking about the price difference. Since I got my Jag I haven't thought about how much I paid for it, and I think that is a good policy.
that's a sensible idea for someone wanting an inexpensive backup to a jag. even with some upgraded hardware, you're going to be into it for under $600. very nice!
