But to answer your question, since I've played both, they're great sounding pickups. I would actually agree with the tone chart that DiMarzio has on their site. The SS definitely has more of a scooped mid sound, very articulate, and a great pickup for fast picking stuff.
The SMM has a really nice midrange that I find cuts through well when tuning down to B or A, where things can get a bit flubby. Especially since it doesn't have quite as much low end, so low tunings don't get really boomy.
Cool, right now im really into the crunch lab. I think it sounds GREAT with a basswood body. I have one in my PRS too, but was considering the steves special of a d activator as i find the CL to be very glassy and bassy in that guitar
I setup a PRS yesterday. I swear it's the best guitar I've ever played.
Last time I played one I thought the same, but because I was teen at the time I thought it was just an age thing, and I wouldn't be so impressed today. I was....
Best can be a bit boring and sterile but I don't care , this is the guitar I want to save up for. I couldn't fault it.
I'm looking at a secondhand CE22 or 24 probably, they're now discontinued... I could get one for about £750 ish I reckon.
^Cool price. You could pick up an old MIJ Jackson for a little less, though they are a matter of taste.
I had a Superstrat moment this week, it happens periodically were i pick mine up and wonder why i even bother with any other model of guitar. They are so comfortable and versatile.
I went to test it out... and I just couldn't see myself playing it. The flamed clownburst finish creeped me out.
But I did buy a Fender Champ 600 to bring back, since I can fit it in my backpack. Hope the TSA doesn't freak out when they see a guitar amp in a backpack.

Have you still got that Jackson you got recently? I saw that you mentioned you sold a large chunk of your guitars in another post somewhere..?
Second hand, half the price.
Both Jacksons were sold, i panicked after my op and sold a lot of stuff. As it turns out ive had quite a lot of work so im a bit pissed about selling the mij Jackson, but i've always wanted one of these so it may be a good thing.
The Kahler holds tune if you break a string too, my main gripe with Floyds.
The Fret Music shop isn't actually that far from my house, and I'm almost certain I've seen that Tokai in person. I could probably go check it out if you like?
In other news, and not sure if it fits in this thread, I'm sort of interested in this - Link
It seems a decent price considering what they go for new, but I'm not convinced by the versatility of active pickups.
Those C-1s are fantastic players and that seems like a good price. You could always sell the pickups and swap them if you don't like them.
Here's a somewhat recent addition to my stable, the only super strat I own at the moment. It's a 1986 Ibanez Pro Line, sort of a hybrid between a Roadstar and an RG. They only made these for two years before separating the Pro Line series out into different models. Best part about this guitar is the neck, it's oil finished from the factory and it's not often that you see a bound Ibanez neck with dots. Pickups are pretty awesome too...plus, as awkward as the switching system looks, it's actually very functional and useful. It's got a push button for each pickup, and a coil tap for the bridge. Or you can just use the 5-way. If you can find one for cheap (I got this off craigslist for $175), dew it!
