Greetings, all. Anyone have one of these, or perhaps has played one, and have an opinion? I'm wondering how Les Paulish they sound. How I wish Fender would make a higher quality Cyclone with a mahogany body and set neck. Or, alternatively, that Gibson would make a neck that's not a baseball bat...
Well, to me anyway, the 60s necks I've tried don't feel all that much better than the big 50s. Maybe I just need to keep trying, though. As for the Toronados, they do look interesting, alright, but I've never actually gotten to get my hands on one.
Most Gibson necks are not "baseball bats", they haven't really done that too often since the '50s (as in the actual 1950s, even the vast majority of their current "50s profile" necks on new guitars are comfortably tapered like a '60s profile and just a bit thicker). A lot of SGs have very thin necks too. On that same note, most modern Fenders tend to have pretty chunky necks. Everything's becoming sort of generic unless specifically noted otherwise or a vintage reissue.

I wasn't going to chime in, but I'm with you, I've never played a modern Gibson that I've thought had a substantial neck. I was kinda confused by the op's lament.
Well, I certainly agree that Gibson's so-called 50s and 60s neck profiles don't feel very different, but I have to say that, to me anyway, they both feel much thicker than a Fender c-shaped neck. Perhaps it's the shape or radius rather than the thickness that's the problem.

the Fender JA-90 is made in Korea. right in the same damn factory with the Squier's. just like back in 1996 when fender Japan was putting out the vista series
I tried one that was on sale locally (Gumtree) it wasn't very good at all. It keeps cropping up every few months. I guess the guy can't get rid of it, at least not at the price he's looking for.
It reminded me of the old Indonesian Squiers, and felt about the same quality.
Your suggestions are nice, but the op wanted something that was close to a les paul and the JA-90 unlike your suggestions has a set neck and same scale length as a les paul and in my opinion sounds very much like a les paul special. Oh and they are not $1000. They go for like 800 new 600 used.

Exactly. I really like the 24.75 scale length. I need to get my hands on one of those. Or just break down and get the Pawn Shop Mustang Special, which is still the nicest feeling guitar I've ever played, notwithstanding that it's not terribly LPish...
I guess the black one is the Squier Tele Custom II with P-90s...
