Post by boredinclass »

I just recently got this but I cant seem to find any 65 reissues online in black.
It definitely isnt a refin. Has anybody else seen this before?

Not sure about reissues and black. I know someone here will. I love the pickguard. I need one for my black Mustang. My Mustang was damaged sunburst refined in black.

Can't read the serial number but on the neck, but what makes you think it's a 94/95? Also I'm pretty sure Fender of Japan have started recycling serial number letters. And I know some of the new Mustangs say "Made in Japan". So confusing to date MIJ/CIJ Mustangs. One other thing I thought of, it might be a well-modded Duo-Sonic body. Plenty of those came in black. Pull the neck off the body if you're comfortable with that, the neck pocket should be dated IIRC.

Surely a '69 reissue? Not sure about coming in black, who knows in the '90s, if it came out of Japan, as in wasn't made for export I wouldn't put it beyond reason.

There were a number of '94 / '95 MIJ Mustangs exported. There was a thread on here recently about them I think. But I've only ever seen them in white, blue, and red, just like the original Mustang. They all had slab bodies and veneer necks with faux clay dot inlays as far as I know.

Not a fan of black guitars but I haven't seen many Mustangs (none) in black. That looks great. Is it a satin finish? That's how it looks to me in your pic.

Lack of contours means it's a 65, not 69 reissue. Maybe a factory special run? Fender Japan are always releasing limited runs of all sorts of colours for their domestic market, maybe this is one that got imported?

Are you UK based? There was a black R.I. Mustang recently, in London I think, but the listing stated clearly that it was refinished and at which shop on Denmark street.
If you search completed listings, you might find it.
There was a pic of the back of the neck that showed the serial number, so could be the same one?

Ah, I just assumed that the recent '65 reissue was a new thing, and that Mustang reissues had always been '69s.

the original run of 90s mustang reissues were slab bodies, but i've never seen a black one, only white + tort.

are you sure you just haven't mis-dated it? some japanese serial numbers don't tally up with what's given on dating sites.

Yup it is indeed a slab body. I'm pretty sure its a 90's model if anything because the dotting on the neck is smaller and farther apart than later 65 reissues
It also came with stock kluson style tuners instead of f tuners but with 65 decal.
I'll post more pics later of the neck and pocket and check if it is refinished or a duo sonic body.

The Japanese market versions came in loads of colours. Same as all the other Fender stuff they sell over there. This may well be one of those.

Just leave it alone. Forget what it is. Play it.

Nice color combo. You don't see that on mustangs.
