Sunn 1000s: soliciting suggestions on speakers etc.
So I have this monster Sunn 1000s. 120 watts, but more like 300. Both transformers are respectively bigger than a moderate sized infant and there are like 20 tubes in the fucking thing. It's loud and clear. I was gonna try to find a matching 2x15 cabinet but that's basically impossible. So I'm probably going to get an Avatar "traditional" 4x12 cabinet because it matches the head pretty well. Not sure what kind of speakers to get. I play the space rock and get heavy frequently with too many pedals, including lots of lower octaver shit. Was thinking maybe 2 eminence wizards and 2 swap thangs. Anybody got some suggestions? Thanks.

How does the Swamp/Wizard 2x12 sound clean? I'm wondering if I could get away with a 2x12 just to save money. Concerned about my amp putting out too much power, and the fact that I've got a lot of super gainy fuzz pedals I use sometimes (i.e. BAT Oath/Ritual combo). But I'd much rather lug around a 2x12 than a 4x12.
The Swamp Thing has a ton of bass but a fairly clean, open sound. The Wizard feels much more "coloured" and shaped, in that even clean it has some of that classic rock sort of sound. And a ton of bass. I'd say it's less transparent than the Swamp Thing but it doesn't suffer for it; they both sound excellent and really complement each other. I'm not even sure I've broken them in yet anyway. They're from two different series', the Swamp Thing is supposed to be a more "American" sound while The Wizard is meant to be a more British sort of sound.
I had a Zilla cabs 2x12 made for me, one of the oversized ones, closed back. Stick some real power into it and, with the two Eminence speakers, I'd say it could give a bog-standard 4x12 cab a cold sweat. It's never truly going to compete but it's about as close as you'll get without needing a mate to carry your speakers around for you.

That sounds like a good endorsement...the 'Fatboy', right? I mailed Zilla a while back about getting a 2x12, and they recommended V30 paired with a G12H for what I wanted it for. As in, a bit more versatility in the studio and able to be carried around without assistance if necessary. Bascially, I'm after an old-school Orange/Matamp sound, and the Zilla looks like it could get me there...for over a hundred quid less than the equivalent Orange closed-back.ekwatts wrote:I had a Zilla cabs 2x12 made for me, one of the oversized ones, closed back. It's movable but unless you're several magnitudes stronger than me (unlikely, I'm built like a Greek God (I'm joking)) you're not going to be carrying it down the street. However, with the top handle combined with one of the side handles you can easily carry it across a room, reposition it and so on all on your own. It's really quite a big boy.Concretebadger wrote:That sounds like a good endorsement...the 'Fatboy', right? I might be selling mine... depending entirely on what I buy this Friday. So keep an eye out. It would probably be the full package, with the Eminence speakers loaded and everything.
