Cheers for the tip I actually have an old iron awaiting a trip to the recycling centre, which I shall now rescue from a box of junk in the garage.

One of my mates told me that this was the same type of guitar Adrian Utley used on 'the Rip' except he got his for£4 and in good nick. Even sent me a pic of Adrian playing his. Made me realise how fucked this guitar is... now I know what I'm aiming to restore it to.
Here's the video he got the pic from - he plays the guitar at 9:15

It'll do the job. Just make sure it all goes back together nicely before gluing it up. Are you going to refinish it in any way?

Not sure I'm new to this fixing stuff carry on, I'll see how the repairs go and if that turns out ok I'll be back asking questions about how to do a refinish... I hope it works cause its a cool wee guitar, I'd like to save it from the bin.

sit it backwards in the corner and toss fresh cut banana slices and lag bolts at it.

well - all seems to have gone to plan, the strings are on and the neck hasn't come back off... this is a surprisingly nice sounding guitar.
